Baseball Team Drops Two at Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Elmhurst baseball team opened the CCIW portion of its schedule by dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Illinois Wesleyan University. Elmhurst fell 1-0 in the opening game before falling 9-5 in the night cap.

ILL. WESLEYAN 1, ELMHURST 0 (Game One) - Illinois Wesleyan earned a 1-0 victory in a pitcher's duel between the two squads.

Illinois Wesleyan scored the game's only run in the fifth inning. Jarod Juskiewicz led off the inning with a triple and scored on Gino Cavalieri's RBI single.

Elmhurst put runners in scoring position during the sixth and seventh innings but couldn't come up with the game-tying hit.

Elmhurst managed four hits in the loss with Brandon Kressner, Greg Struck, Regan McReynolds and Matt Conroy each recording a hit.

Justin Theisen suffered the loss for the Bluejays despite pitching a complete game. Thiesen allowed just seven hits and one earned run over nine innings. He walked one and struck out five. 

John Munyon earned the win for the Titans, tossing seven innings and allowing just four hits while striking out seven. Dan Truesdale pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his fourth save of the season.

ILL. WESLEYAN 9, ELMHURST 5 (Game Two) - Illinois Wesleyan finished the doubleheader sweep with a 9-5 win in game two. 

The Titans broke a scoreless tie by sending 11 batters to the plate and recording seven hits and scoring five runs. The Titans added three runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth to build a 9-0 lead.

Elmhurst jumped on the scoreboard with four runs in the sixth. Zach Tsiodras singled home a run and Struck plated a run with a sacrifice fly. Evan Berliner added a two-run single in the inning.

The Bluejays threatened in the bottom of the ninth, scoring a run on a Tsiodras single. The Bluejays loaded the bases and brought the tying run to the plate with just one out, but a strikeout and a ground out ended the contest.

Tsiodras and Berliner drove in two runs apiece in the loss. Kressner, Ben Havel, Tsiodras, Berliner and Mike Rostine collected two hits apiece for the Bluejays.

Cavaliere and Pat Mollo finished with three hits apiece to pace the Titan's offense. Cavaliere and Juskiewicz each drove in two runs.

Jeff Guzzi made the start and took the loss for the Bluejays, allowing eight hits and five runs in 3.1 innings of work. He struck out two while not issuing a walk. Matt Hart picked up the win for the Titans, throwing 5.1 innings and allowing six hits, and two unearned runs. He walked one and struck out five. 

Elmhurst (5-8, 0-2 CCIW) wraps up the three-game series against Illinois Wesleyan (10-4, 2-0 CCIW) tomorrow (March 29) at Noon.
