Elmhurst Softball Team Splits Pair in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Elmhurst softball team moved its 2015 record to 9-3 after splitting a pair of contests on its annual spring trip to Florida. The Bluejays fell 5-2 to fifth-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater but bounced back to upend Middlebury 7-2.

WHITEWATER 5, ELMHURST 2 - Whitewater snapped Elmhurst's four-game winning streak by handing Elmhurst a 5-2 loss. It marked the second time this week that the Bluejays fell to the Warhawks.

Whitewater used a pair of homers and the arm of Bekka Houda to earn the victory.

Deven CuCharme belted a solo homer in the first and Hannah Taylor added a two-run shot in the second inning to stake the Warhawks to a quick three-run lead. Elmhurst got a run back in the fourth on Bella Masini's RBI double, but Whitewater pushed home a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their cushion to four.

A Tiffany Potthast sacrifice fly in the sixth inning accounted for the Bluejays' final run of the contest.

Ele Walter recorded two of Elmhurst's four hits in the loss and also scored a run. 

Houda improved to 5-1 with the win for Whitewater, working all seven innings and allowing just four hits and two runs while striking out nine.

ELMHURST 7, MIDDLEBURY 2 - Elmhurst bounced back from the loss to handle Middlebury 7-2 in the team's second game of the day.

Elmhurst secured a quick 1-0 lead in the first when Masini squeezed home a run. Middlebury promptly tied the score with a run in the top of the second, but a two-run single from Potthast in the bottom of the frame put the Bluejays in front 3-1.

Elmhurst added a pair of runs in the fourth on a two-run single from Masini to take a 6-1 lead. Middlebury got a run back in the top of the fitfh, but the Bluejays' put the game out of reach in the sixth when Potthast drove in her third run of the contest.

Masini and Potthast sparked Elmhurst's offense by each driving in three runs. Walter collected a pair of hits while scoring two runs.

Potthast improved to 3-1 on the season with the victory from the circle. She scattered 10 hits and two walks while pitching all seven innings and allowing just two earned runs.

Elmhurst wraps up its Florida trip on Friday, March 27, with games against Lawrence University and Thomas College.
