Softball Team Sweeps Pair in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Elmhurst softball team upped its record to 6-2 on the season by sweeping a pair of contests on its Florida road trip. Elmhurst opened the day with a 6-1 win over Wisconsin-Oshkosh and then pounded Rochester Institute of Technology 19-4 in the nightcap.

ELMHURST 5, OSHKOSH 1 - Elmhurst banged out 10 hits while scoring its fifth victory of the season in a 6-1 win over Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Elmhurst grabbed a quick lead in the second on Brianna Thompson's sacrifice fly. Oshkosh answered back with a run in the top of the third, but the Bluejays answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Thompson provided the big hit in the inning with a two-run single. Elmhurst tacked on three runs in the fifth on an RBI double from Tiffany Potthast, a run-scoring single from Bella Masini and an RBI double from Thompson.

Thompson powered Elmhurst at the plate, finishing 2-for-2 with a team-leading four RBI. Masini added two hits while scoring three runs and driving in a run. Ele Walter also collected two hits for the Bluejays.

Katie Boals earned her first victory of the season (1-1), tossing six innings and allowing just three hits and one run. She struck out one while not issuing a walk.

ELMHURST 19, RIT 4 - An 11-run second inning helped fuel a 19-4 Elmhurst rout over RIT. The win upped the Bluejays' record in Florida to 4-2 and 6-2 overall on the season.

Trailing 2-1 entering the second, the Bluejays sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs on nine hits. Meg Griffin recorded two hits in the inning and drove in four while Alyssa Jasinski, Thompson, and Mikayla Melone all drove in two runs apiece.

The Bluejays tacked on two runs in the third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth en route to the 15-run victory.

Griffin led Elmhurst's hit parade with three hits, two runs and four RBI. Potthast also finished with three hits while scoring a run and driving in one. Thompson finished 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. Lauren Rismondo added two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Baleigh LaSota collected two hits and scored a pair of runs in the win.

Potthast earned the win from the circle, improving to 2-1 on the season. She worked all five innings, allowing eight hits and four runs. She fanned one while not issuing a walk.

Elmhurst has tomorrow off before returning to action on Wednesday (March 25) to face Buena Vista University and Union College.
