Men's Soccer Team's Season Ends In Shootout

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's soccer team's 2015 season came to an end in a shootout in a semifinal of the CCIW Tournament. The Bluejays played Carthage to a scoreless double overtime draw, but the Red Men advanced to the CCIW Tournament Championship in an epic 10-9, 11-round shootout.

Elmhurst (8-8-3) and Carthage (10-7-3) played each other to a scoreless draw after 110 minutes of action.  The Red Men had a slight advantage in shots at 14-10, but the Bluejays put more shots on net than Carthage (5-3).

Elmhurst had a chance near the end of the first overtime as Josh Arvidson fired a shot as time was winding down, but Niko Mavrogiannis made a save to send the game into a second overtime.

The Bluejays caught a break in the second overtime as Carthage's Austin Bitta shot off a throw in hit the bottom of the cross bar. 

In the shootout, it was Mavrogiannis making a save on Alec Gnass' attempt to give Carthage an early 2-1 lead. Trailing 3-2, Nick King made a save on Bitta's shot and Elmhurst evened the score in the bottom of the frame with a goal from Austin Larsen

The two teams were even at 4-4 after the initial round of five. It took six additional rounds before the advancer was decided. Carthage's Nick Vogel scored in the 11th round to put the Red Men in front 10-9. Nick Fecci's shot sailed high, allowing Carthage to advance. 

Elmhurst wrapped up the season with an 8-8-3 overall record. After starting the season with a 1-6-1 mark, the Bluejays turned in an impressive second half with a 7-2-2 mark and advanced to the CCIW Tournament semifinals for the second consecutive year.
