GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's basketball team overcame two six-point deficits in overtime to extend the game, but fell in double overtime 108-107.
Mikaela EppardThe Bluejays (2-1) led by 13 heading into the fourth quarter, but a 31-point quarter by Westminster (2-1) forced overtime. In the first overtime, Westminster led by six on two occasions, but Elmhurst forced a second overtime with a three-pointer from
Mikaela Eppard with two second to go. In the second extra period, neither team led by more than three and the Bluejays took a one-point lead into the final 20 seconds, but Andrea Zalis netted two three throws with 12 seconds to go to give Westminster a one-point lead. Elmhurst had two shots at the basket in the final seconds, but Eppard and
Hannah Henderson both missed their potential game-winning jumpers.
The first quarter featured five lead changes and one tie as the teams traded runs. However, Elmhurst took control in the second quarter, starting the period with a 14-3 run to take an 12-point lead. The Bluejays led by as much as 15 and took a 13-point lead into the locker room.
Michaela KumerWestminster scored the first eight points of the third quarter to cut the lead to five, but every time the Blue Jays came closer, Elmhurst took control again with a run of its own. After Westminster's first run, a
Michaela Kumer four-point play stretched the lead to 10. Late in the quarter, the Blue Jays pulled within seven, but
Courtney Spencer sank consecutive shots to go on a solo 5-0 run.
Elmhurst entered the fourth quarter with a 13-point advantage and extended the lead to a game-high 16 with a
Claire Monroe three-pointer with 7:26 to go in regulation. Over the next four-and-a-half minutes, Westminster put together a 20-3 run to secure their first lead since late in the first quarter, 84-83. After Zalis hit a three to put Westminster up by two,
Hannah Lipman tied the game at 87 with 42 second to go. The teams traded steals and Westminster missed a last-second shot to send the game into overtime.
Both teams shot around 50-percent in the offensive showcase. Elmhurst outrebounded the Blue Jays 53-31, but turned the ball over 27 times to Westminster's 20.
Eppard led the Bluejays 28 points and 17 rebounds. Monroe (19),
Hannah Lipman (18), and Kumer (14) also reached double-figures for Elmhurst. Lipman also led the team in assists (seven) and ranked second, behind Eppard, in rebounds with seven.
Zalis led all scorers with 30, including the game-winning free throws. Mackenzie Haddox (24), Krista Armontrout (20), and Kasey Gatson (14) all reached double-figures for Westminster. The rest of the team combined for a total of 16 points
(10 total bench points).
Elmhurst plays its home opener this Tuesday, November 24 against Aurora with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
