ELMHURST, Ill. - Three Bluejays scored in double figures as the Elmhurst women's basketball team defeated Aurora 79-68 in its home opener.
Kaela JonesKaela Jones totaled a career-high 14 points to lead the Bluejays, while
Michaela Kumer (13) and
Claire Monroe (12) also reached double-digit points for Elmhurst.
After Aurora scored the first bucket, the Bluejays (3-1) scored the next five points as a part of a 14-3 run and never trailed again. Elmhurst took a quarter-high 10-point lead on a Jones three-pointer and took a 26-17 lead into the first break.
Michaela KumerAfter Aurora (1-3) cut the lead to seven in the second quarter on a Bathany Dorrington three-point play, Kumer, Jones, and Monroe all hit three-pointers in the next two minutes to extend the Elmhurst lead to 14 and the Bluejays cruised to an 11-point halftime advantage. Elmhurst forced 11 turnovers and only coughed up the ball four times in the half.
Claire MonroeBoth teams came out of the gates cold in the second half with five total points scored in the first four-and-a-half minutes. After Elmhurst called timeout, Monroe hit another three-pointer to lift Elmhurst's lead to 13. Aurora slowly chipped away and a three-pointer by Dorrington with 25 seconds left in the quarter brought the Spartans within nine.
The Bluejays once again asserted themselves in the fourth quarter, jumping out to a game-high 15-point lead with an 8-2 run. The lead remained double-digits for the rest of the game.
The Bluejays shot 48-percent from the floor, 47-percent from three-point range, and 83-percent from the free-throw stripe in the contest.
Lisa Logan and
Mikaela Eppard led the way with seven rebounds, while
Katie Swanson dished out three assists.
Aurora shot 40-percent for the contest with Dorrington's 18 leading the way. Mallory Cast joined her in double figures with 10.
Elmhurst travels to the North Park University Tournament this weekend, opening up play against Wartburg College Saturday, November 28 at 4:00 p.m.
