ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's soccer team fell to Wheaton 3-1 in its CCIW opener.
The Thunder (8-3, 1-0 CCIW) put up two first half goals before the Bluejays (5-3-1, 0-1 CCIW) pulled within one. Wheaton added an insurance goal late to seal the victory.
Sydney Sharkey put Wheaton up 1-0 with her third goal of the season. Kristin Rauh threaded a pass to her and, after a long run, she beat Elmhurst keeper
Melinda Vickers. Ally Witt added to the Wheaton lead when she fought off a defender and buried a shot inside the left upper 90.
Sidney O'Keeffe saw a golden opportunity slip just wide at the end of the first half, sending Elmhurst to the locker room with a 2-0 deficit.
Vickers kept Elmhurst in the game with six second-half saves and, late in the half,
Kennedy Irmen pulled the Bluejays to within one. A
Kat Waugh free kick rolled across goal, off of
Megan Hart, and Irmen buried the shot from 10 yards out.
Just two minutes later, Wheaton added an insurance goal as Witt found Sarah Frey on a cross and Frey headed in her first goal of the year.
Wheaton out shot Elmhurst 28-15. Vickers recorded all six of her saves in the second half, while Abbey Fuster stopped three Elmhurst chances.
Elmhurst hosts IIT Tuesday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. in its last non-conference game.
