Volleyball Team Downs Bluffton, Falls to Wittenberg

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Elmhurst volleyball team wrapped up its two-day stay at the Calvin College's Midwest Invitational with a 3-1 record after splitting pair of matches on the final day of the tournament.

Elmhurst, ranked 16th in the latest AVCA Division III poll, opened the day with a five-set win over Bluffton before falling in four sets to seventh-ranked Wittenberg University.

ELMHURST 3, BLUFFTON 2 - Elmhurst scored its 20th win of the season by upending Bluffton 23-25, 25-19, 28-26, 13-25, 15-10.

Elmhurst had a chance to take the opening set, leading 22-20, but Bluffton finished with a 5-1 run to steal the opening set. The Bluejays quickly evened the match by scoring a a 25-19 win in the second set. 

Elmhurst fell behind early in the third set, trailing 10-6. The Bluejays pulled even at 18-all before grabbing a 24-22 lead. Bluffton won the next three points to score a set point at 25-24, but a kill from Hannah Nimrick evened the score at 25-all. The Bluejays dodged another set point at 26-25, scoring three consecutive points to win the third set 28-26. 

Bluffton dominated the fourth set right from the start, building an early 15-10 lead and finishing with a 10-3 run for the 25-13 victory.

In the decisive fifth set, the Bluejays build an early 7-2 lead before Bluffton rallied, with a 6-2 run to pull to within a point at 9-8. The Bluejays won the next four points to go in front 13-8 before putting the set away at 15-10 to take the match.

Elmhurst hit .235 for the match with 68 kills and 29 errors in 166 attempts. Hannah Nimrick recorded her ninth triple-double of the season, recording 11 kills, 43 assists and 10 digs in the victory. Mary Lawrence powered the Bluejays' attack with 16 kills while Hannah Davis added 12 kills and three blocks. Alli Rogers added eight kills while Jamie Vargo totaled seven. Amy Schryver led the Bluejays' defense with 24 digs.

WITTENBERG 3, ELMHURST 1 - Elmhurst dropped to 20-8 overall following an 18-25, 23-25, 25-20, 23-25 loss to seventh-ranked Wittenberg.

The opening set was even at 10-10 before Wittenberg used a 6-1 run to take control. Elmhurst came no closer than two points for the duration of the set before Wittenberg pulled away for the 25-18 win. 

Wittenberg grabbed an early 15-10 lead in the second set and held off a late surge from Elmhurst to score the 25-23 win. The Tigers led 24-20 but Elmhurst fought off three straight set points before Courtney Huck put the set away for Wittenberg with a kill.

Wittenberg build an early 10-6 lead in the third, but the Bluejays answered back with a 9-2 run to grab a 15-12 lead. The Bluejays led by as many as seven points before putting the set away at 25-20. 

Elmhurst opened up a quick 11-6 lead in the fourth before Wittenberg surged in front at 19-17. Elmhurst pulled seven at 23-23, but a kill from Kendall Farmer and an attack error on the Bluejays sealed the match for Wittenberg.

Elmhurst hit .180 for the contest with 51 kills and 26 errors in 139 swings. Nimrick paced the Elmhurst offense in the loss, finishing with nine kills, nine digs and 33 assists. Jamie Vargo and Alli Rogers added nine kills apiece while Lawrence totaled seven kills. Schryver led the squad in digs with 17.

Elmhurst travels to North Central College on Tuesday, October 20.
