Cassie Kovach scored the lone win of the night at No. 1 singles as Elmhurst women's tennis fell to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 8-1 to open their 2014 campaign.
The Blugolds swept all three doubles matches and won five of the six singles contests, improving to 1-1 on the season. The Bluejays fell to 0-1. At. No. 1 doubles, Maddie Johnson and Madison Rossebo, ranked 19th in the central region, edged Kovach and
Nicole Darga 8-5 to open the match. Nicole Pothen and Paige Kuepers scored another point for the Blugolds at No. 2 with an 8-3 win over
Brittany Kuehn and
Hannah Vaselaney. Colleen McCullough and Sarah Henderson blanked
Lauren Kuehn and
Allie Moran 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.
Kovach defeated Johnson 7-5, 3-6, 10-3 at No. 1 singles to give Elmhurst a point. McCullough beat Darga at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-1, while Pothen won over B. Kuehn 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3. At No. 4, Vaselaney fell to Kuepers 6-0, 6-2 and L. Kuehn dropped the No. 5 singles contest against Henderson by a 6-2, 6-1 decision. Olivia Gallagher finished out a 8-1 UW-Eau Claire win by blanking Moran 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
The Bluejays face St. Norbert College in DePere, Wis. tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
