Bluejays Swept in Doubleheader Against Augustana

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst baseball team dropped both ends of a CCIW doubleheader to Augustana College, falling 10-1 in game one and 9-6 in the night cap.

Elmhurst dropped to 4-13 overall and 0-7 in the CCIW while Augustana moved to 13-6 overall and 5-2 in the CCIW.

AUGUSTANA 10, ELMHURST 1 - Augustana scored 10 runs over the final three innings to pull away for the nine-run victory.

Elmhurst jumped on the scoreboard quickly as Dave Wolak blasted a solo homer to left center in the bottom of the first. The Bluejays made the lead stand up for the first six innings before running into trouble in the seventh.

In the seventh, Augustana tied the game on a Trace Gingerich RBI single. Jacob Van Duyne and Brandon Jasper added two-out run-scoring singles to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead. The Vikings blew the game open in the eighth inning, scoring seven runs, all with two outs, taking advantage of an Elmhurst error that extended the inning. Alex Fluehr and Grant Stewart delivered the big blows for Augustana with both players smashing three-run homers in the inning.

Wolak recorded two of Elmhurst's seven hits in the loss.

Jordan Hanlon took the loss for the Bluejays, tossing 7.2 innings and allowing 12 hits and just three earned runs. He walked two and fanned six. Seth Davis picked up the win for Augustana, scattering six hits, two walks and one earned run in seven innings. Davis struck out 10 hitters while improving to 3-0 on the season.

AUGUSTANA 9, ELMHURST 6 - Augustana scored six runs in the opening two innings and held off a late rally from the Bluejays to finish the doubleheader sweep.

The Vikings plated four runs in the opening inning with Nick Tenerelli and Gingerich knocking in two runs apiece. Elmhurst scored a run in the bottom of the first on Ben Havel's RBI single, but the Vikings responded with two runs in the top of the second coming from a two-run single from Danny Fifer.

Wolak cracked his second home run of the day in the third to pull Elmhurst to within four runs, but the Vikings came right back with a run in the top of the fourth.

Greg Struck blasted a solo homer in the sixth and Tyler Wargo cracked a two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh to pull the Bluejays to within two runs. Elmhurst put the tying runs on base in the seventh, but a double play ended the scoring threat.

Augustana added two runs in the top of the eighth to pad its lead back to four runs. Elmhurst scored a run on a Chris Fisher RBI single in the bottom of the eighth and the Bluejays brought the tying run to the plate, but Augustana managed to work out of the jam and hold on for the three-run victory.

Struck finished 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Bluejays while Wolak, Wargo, Ben Havel and Fisher all recorded two hits apiece in the loss.

Justin Theisen fell to 0-4 on the season after taking the loss. Theisen surrendered 11 hits, four walks and seven earned runs in seven inngs of work. Theisen struck out four Vikings in the loss. Chris Sauer upped his record to 3-1 for the Vikings, tossing 6.1 innings and allowing eight hits and four earned runs while fanning five. Cooper SantAmour picked up the save, tossing 2.2 innings and allowing four hits and one run.

Elmhurst travels to Augustana on Sunday, March 6, to wrap up the three-game series.
