Bluejays' Rally Comes Up Short Against Rockford

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst baseball team's rally against Rockford College came up short in an 11-8 loss to the Regents.

Rockford (16-14) scored nine runs between the seventh and eighth innings to turn a one-run deficit into an 11-3 lead. The Regents struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the second inning on four hits and a sacrifice fly. Elmhurst evened the score in the bottom of the third when Ben Havel blasted a two-run homer to left field.

The Bluejays grabbed a 3-2 lead in the fifth. A.J. Compton led off the inning with a single and then stole second. With two outs, Zach Tsiodras singled to center allowing Compton to come around and score.

Rockford cashed in on a dropped fly ball in the seventh inning to score three unearned runs. Terry Wiltshire put the Regents in front by two with a two-run single.

The Regents sent 11 batters to the plate in the eighth inning and plated six runs on five hits, two walks, and an Elmhurst error.

Elmhurst (11-19) answered back in the bottom of the eighth, taking advantage of a pair of Rockford errors to score five runs. Edgar Ross doubled home a pair of runs while Compton and Dave Wolak also knocked home runs for the Bluejays. Elmhurst brought the tying run to the plate, but Regents' reliever Michael Murray struck out the final two batters of the inning to end the Bluejays' scoring threat.

Compton led the Bluejays at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a run driven in. Havel, Ross and Chris Fisher added two hits apiece for the Bluejays. Havel drove in two and also scored two runs while Ross knocked in two for Elmhurst.

Wiltshire led Rockford at the plate by finishing 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three driven in.

Brennan McClung took the loss for the Bluejays, working 6.2 innings and allowing five runs (just two earned). He walked two and fanned three while scattering six hits. Eric Miller picked up the win in relief for the Regents by tossing two scoreless innings. Murray picked up the save by retiring all six batters he faced, including four by strike out.

Elmhurst travels to Millikin University on Saturday, April 26.
