Bluejays Drop Slugfest To Calvin

Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Elmhurst baseball team dropped to 4-6 on the season after falling in an 18-10 slugfest to Calvin College at the RussMatt Tournament.

The two squads slugged it out over the first three innings, combining for 15 runs between them.

Calvin (7-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first, but RBIs from Zach Tsiodras, Luke Collins, Greg Struck and Tom Pumo in the bottom of the first put the Bluejays on top 4-2. Calvin answered back with five runs in the top of the second, but the Bluejays used two-run homers from Struck and Matt Conroy to take the lead back at 8-7 in the bottom of the third.

Calvin surged back in front with a pair of solo homers from Grant Van Putten and Ben Wohl in the fourth inning, but Tsiodras knotted the score at 9-9 with an RBI single for the Bluejays.

An RBI triple from Jordan VanderWall put Calvin in front 10-9 in the fifth inning and the Knights extended their lead to 11-9 with a run in the eighth inning. An RBI single from Tyler Wargo in the bottom of the eighth cut Calvin's lead back to down to one at 11-10.

Things fell apart for the Bluejays in the top of the ninth as four Elmhurst errors led to seven unearned runs for Calvin and let the Knights blow the game open and pull away for the victory.

Struck finished with two hits and three RBIs for the Bluejays while Tsiodras and Conroy finished with two hits and two RBIs apiece.

Peter Cupery led Calvin with three hits while driving in six. Wohl finished 5-for-5 with four runs scored and four runs batted in.

Brennan McClung took the loss in relief for Elmhurst, despite allowing just four hits and three runs in three innings of work. He struck out five while not issuing a walk.
