Box Score 2 JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Elmhurst baseball team moved to 2-3 on the season after splitting a doubleheader with the University of Dubuque.
Elmhurst dropped the opening game 4-1 before rebounding to take the night cap 12-6.
DUBUQUE 4, ELMHURST 1 - Elmhurst struggled on offense, managing just two hits and one run in the seven-inning loss to the Spartans.
The Bluejays grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning on
Greg Struck's RBI double.
Dubuque (1-3) jumped on the scoreboard in the fifth. After a leadoff double, Vince Parisi cracked a two-run homer to give the Spartans the lead. Dubuque tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to hold on for the 4-1 victory.
Justin Theisen took the loss for Elmhurst despite allowing just three hits and three earned runs. He walked five and struck out five in 6.1 innings of work. Alan Kopp earned the win for Dubuque, allowing just one run and one hit in five innings. He walked three and struck out six. Justin Naval earned the save with scoreless innings of relief. He allowed one hit and one walk while fanning three.
ELMHURST 12, DUBUQUE 6 - Elmhurst's bats came to life in the second game as the Bluejays banged out 21 hits in a 12-6 win over Dubuque.
The Bluejays played long ball, smashing five home runs in the contest.
Elmhurst jumped in front 3-1 in the third inning after
Zach Tsiodras belted a three-run homer. After Dubuque evened the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, Elmhurst reclaimed the lead with four runs in the fifth, sparked by a three-run blast from
Ben Havel.
Dubuque pulled to within a run with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth, but a solo homer from
A.J. Compton gave Elmhurst a two-run cushion in the eighth inning. Elmhurst pulled away in the ninth inning, plating four runs keyed by a solo shot from
Dave Wolak and RBI hits from
Eric Stevenson, Compton and
Tyler Wargo.
Greg Struck finished 5-for-5 at the plate with a pair of doubles in the victory. Wargo finished with four hits while Compton finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and four runs scored. Tsiodras drove in a team-leading four runs in the Elmhurst win.
Ivan Nevarez picked up his first collegiate win, tossing seven innings and allowing seven hits and six runs (four earned). He walked three and struck out three.
Bryan Baker worked two scoreless innings in relief to record the save while striking out five.
Elmhurst takes on MSOE and Capital in Ohio on Saturday, March 16.
