Box Score DECATUR, Ill. - Unable to hold on to a big lead late in the contest, the Elmhurst men's basketball team needed overtime to score an 87-81 win over Millikin University.
Elmhurst (14-10, 6-7 CCIW) looked like it would run away with the contest, building a 45-26 lead at the half and opening up a 22-point advantage in the second half. The Bluejays led 71-50 with just 5:26 remaining in the game, before Millikin (8-16, 2-11) mounted an unbelievable comeback. The Big Blue used a 17-2 run over the next four minutes to pull to within six points with 1:41 left.
Elmhurst pushed its lead back to seven on a
Kyle Wuest free throw, but a lay-up from Deavis Johnson brought Millikin to within five points with 1:25 left. An Elmhurst turnover led to lay-up for Elijah Kimmon lay-up with 1:11 remaining. After a pair of missed free throws by the Bluejays,
Nick Sanford rejected Millikin's Johnson, but the Bluejays missed two more free throws with 27 seconds left. Kimmon missed a three-pointer with 15 seconds left, but the Big Blue grabbed the offensive rebound. After a timeout, Millikin's Jeremy Pezzelle sent the game to overtime with a three-pointer.
In the extra period, Millikin slowly built a three-point cushion on free throws, but Wuest took over for Elmhurst, drilling a pull-up three-pointer from the top of the key to knot the score at 78-all with 3:18 left. After Johnson split a pair of free throws to put Millikin on top 79-78, Wuest drove the lane and was fouled. The Elmhurst guard hit a pair of free throws to put Elmhurst back on top with less than two minutes to play. After a Millikin miss, Sanford converted a pair of free throws to extend Elmhurst's lead to three with 1:10 left. Wuest hit three of four free throws to push Elmhurst's lead back to six with 24 seconds left and help put the game out of reach.
Elmhurst shot 42.2 percent (27-of-64) from the floor, including 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from beyond the arc. Elmhurst also outrebounded Millikin 44-36 in the win. Sanford led four Bluejays in double figures with 15 points. Wuest scored eight of his 13 points in overtime and also collected eight rebounds.
Taylor Baxter and
Nathan Rogers added 11 points apiece while
Bryant Ackerman scored nine for the Bluejays.
Millikin shot 42.6 percent (29-of-68) from the field, but just 25.0 percent (4-of-16) from downtown. Johnson totaled a game-high double-double with 24 points and 16 rebounds to pace the Big Blue in the loss. Jacob Kueher added 19 points for Millikin in the loss while Kimmon scored nine.
Elmhurst wraps up the 2013-14 season on Saturday, February 22, by hosting North Central College at 4:00 p.m.
