Box Score KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst men's basketball team slipped to 13-9 overall and 5-6 in the CCIW after suffering a 76-56 loss at Carthage College.
Elmhurst stayed right with Carthage (15-8, 8-4 CCIW) for the first 10 minutes of the opening half as the Red Men led by just one point (17-16) at the midway point of the half. Carthage slowly pushed their lead up to five points with 3:15 remaining in the half and then closed with an 11-4 run sparked by five points from Marlon Senior to build a 34-22 lead at the half.
Carthage extended their lead up to 20 points early in the second half and never allowed Elmhurst to come any closer than 17 points for the duration of the contest while cruising to the 20-point victory.
Elmhurst shot just 34.7 percent (17-of-49) from the floor in the loss. The Bluejays struggled from three-point range, hitting just 3-of-16 attempts (18.8 percent). Carthage shot an even 50.0 percent (26-of-52), including 40.0 percent (6-of-15) from beyond the arc. The Red Men won the battle on the glass with a 39-22 rebounding advantage.
Both teams were impressive from the foul line as each team shot over 90.0 percent in the contest. Elmhurst hit 19-of-21 (90.5 percent) while Carthage converted 18-of-20 attempts (90.0 percent).
Will Nixon led the Bluejays in the loss with 14 points.
Nathan Rogers chipped in with 11 while
Taylor Baxter and
Bryant Ackerman added seven points apiece for Elmhurst.
Senior led Carthage with 21 points and nine rebounds. Malcom Kelly added 17 points while Donte Logan scored 14 for the Red Men.
Elmhurst travels to Augustana College on Saturday, February 15. The Bluejays currently trail the Vikings by a game-and-a-half in the standings for the final spot in the CCIW Tournament.
