Wrestlers upset #12 Wheaton

ELMHURST, Ill. - Zach Urbanski's major decision win at 285 pounds propelled the Elmhurst wrestling team to a dramatic 22-21 upset win over #12 Wheaton College.

With Elmhurst trailing 21-18, Urbanski took the mat against Wheaton's Tad Haugen in the last bout of the day. The Bluejay used three first period takedown to take a 6-2 advantage, while accumulating 2:18 of riding time. In the final two periods, Urbanski converted on three more takedowns and an escape to win the match 14-5 and send the Bluejays to victory. 

The dual was tight throughout, featuring two ties and a lead change. 

Wheaton started off the dual strong at 125 pounds when Carlos Fuentez won by major decision over Anthony Munoz 13-5.

Elmhurst battled back with three straight wins to take a 15-4 lead. Mark Duda pinned Tom Foy in 4:00 at 133 pounds. Matt Quigley almost scored a major decision win for the Bluejays at 141 pounds, but his opponent Gage Burt converted on a late takedown to bring the match to a 9-3 conclusion. The third consecutive Bluejay victory came at 149 pounds when Blake Santi won by fall over Owen Feenstra in 2:06.

Wheaton evened the score at 15-15 with two wins from at 157 and 165 pounds. Mark Savenok, ranked fifth in the latest NWCA poll, pinned Nick Brown in 3:21 and Stephen Aiello, ranked second in the nation at 165 pounds, won by technical fall over Nick DiNardo 22-7. 

The teams traded the next two matches to even the score once again. Mitch Morris scored a one-point win for the Bluejays over Frank Aiello at 174 pounds. After trailing for much of the match, Morris converted on a takedown with less than 10 seconds remaining to win 13-12 and put the Bluejays in front 18-15. The Thunder answered back when Dan Olsen used four takedowns to beat Bobby Schillinger 11-4. 

Wheaton took their first lead of the night in the penultimate match, a 3-0 win by Logan Walkup over Luis Montoya at 197 pounds. Trailing by three, Urbanski's major decision win clinched the one-point Bluejay victory. 

Elmhurst hosts Trine University Tuesday, November 18.
