GEORGETOWN Texas, - Melissa Nava and
Jackie Pavilonis combined to total 25 kills to lead the Elmhurst volleyball team to a 25-15, 25-18, 25-22 win over Texas Lutheran University at the Southwestern University tournament.
Elmhurst improved to 19-2 with the victory while Texas Lutheran fell to 13-7 on the season.
The Bluejays seized control of the opening set right from the start scoring the first two points and never trailing. The team led by as many as 11 points before cruising to the 25-15 win.Â
While the Bluejays never trailed in the second set, Texas Luthern kept pace early, pulling even at 12-12. A 5-0 run by the Bluejays helped Elmhurst slowly pull away and a kill by
Shannon Burns sealed the set for Elmhurst at 25-18.
Elmhurst won 12 of the first 17 points to open the second set, building a seven-point cushion in the process. Texas Lutheran answered back, using a 13-8 run to even the score at 20-all. A kill from Nava and an ace from Pavilonis put Elmhurst back on top by two. Texas Lutheran pulled to within a point at 23-22, but Nava and Nimrick combined for a block to set up match point. Nava followed with a kill to seal the match for the Bluejays.
Elmhurst hit .254 as a team with 43 kills and 14 errors in 114 attempts. Pavilonis led the way for the Bluejays with 13 kills while hitting .429 for the match. Nava added 12 kills and six blocks while hitting .526.
Alli Rogers and Burns totaled seven kills apiece in the victory. Nimrick totaled 39 assists, 10 digs and three blocks for the Bluejays.
Sam Szarmach led the squad in digs with 19 while adding three kills.
Amy Schryver also reached double figures in digs with 10.
Texas Lutheran hit just .042 for the match with 24 kills and 19 errors in 118 attempts. Kristin Fording led the squad in the loss with eight kills.Â
Elmhurst takes on Southwestern and Hardin-Simmons on the tournament's second day.Â
