BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team's struggles against College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opponents continued as the Bluejays dropped a four-set match at Illinois Wesleyan University.
Illinois Wesleyan (14-10, 3-2) scored a 25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21 win over Elmhurst. The Bluejays dropped to 25-6 overall and 2-3 in the CCIW.
Elmhurst grabbed an early lead in the opening set at 7-4, but the Titans answered back with a 6-3 run to pull even at 10-10.The Titans pulled in front and opened up a three-point cushion at 17-14. Elmhurst closed wo within two points at 23-21, but the Titans won two of the next three points to put away the set at 25-22.
Illinois Wesleyan raced out to a quick 7-2 lead in the second set and never trailed. Elmhurst pulled to within a point at 11-10, but the Titans responded with a 7-2 run to extend their advantage to 18-12. Elmhurst fought of three set points before succumbing 25-21.
Elmhurst won the third set, racing out to a 12-9 lead and extending its cushion to four points at 20-16. The Titans closed to within two points at 21-19, but Elmhurst set up four set points at 24-20. IWU rattled off three straight points to close to within one point, but a ball handling error on the Titans gave the Bluejays the 25-23 victory.
Illinois Wesleyan raced out to an early 10-5 lead in the fourth set, but the Bluejays responded with a 10-3 run to grab a 15-13 lead. Illinois Wesleyan sliced Elmhurst's lead down to a point at 17-16 and then ripped off four straight points to surge in front at 20-17. Elmhurst came within two points at 23-21, but back-to-back kills from Anne Cummings and Maisy Bowden closed out the set and the match for the Titans.
Elmhurst hit .142 for the match with 46 kills and 22 errors in 169 attempts. Illinois Wesleyan finished the match hitting .215 with 60 kills and 23 errors in 172 attempts.
Jackie Pavilonis led Elmhurst in the loss with 12 kills and four blocks.
Sam Szarmach finished with 11 kills and 16 digs while
Melissa Nava added 10 kills for the Bluejays.
Hannah Nimrick finished with 38 assists and 14 digs.
Peggy Clemens totaled 17 digs and
Amy Schryver finished with 16 for the Bluejays.
Kyleigh Block led the Titans with 17 kills and 17 digs while Kinzie Schweigert and Cummings totaled 11 kills apiece. Mary Rankin totaled 28 digs while Nicole Bing tallied 29 assists and 10 digs for the Titans.
Elmhurst will look to get back on track when the Bluejays host North Central College on Tuesday, October 28.Â
