Bluejays Come Back to Defeat IIT

CHICAGO, Ill. - In the final minutes, Emily Heimerdinger and Jackie Belmonte scored just 90 seconds apart to propel Elmhurst women's soccer to a 2-1 victory over the Illinois Institute of Technology.

The Bluejays (9-5, 2-2 CCIW) trailed 1-0 for over 50 minutes of play until scoring twice in the final three minutes to defeat the Scarlet Hawks (8-6).

IIT found the net in the 35th minute. Noemi Luna scored off an assist from Anida,Phetchanpheng to put the Scarlet Hawks into the lead 1-0.

With just 3:39 left on the clock and Elmhurst still trailing, Heimerdinger dribbled through a couple of defenders and scored left-footed from just outside the penalty area. Lion Gaffney assisted on the goal, Heimerdinger's fourth of the season.

Eighty-nine seconds later, with overtime looming, Belmonte one-timed a shot from close range off a Courtney O'Keeffe cross. Belmonte's goal came with just 2:10 remaining in regulation.

The Bluejays out shot the Scarlet Hawks 16-8. The Elmhurst defense only surrendered two shots in the second half and neither of them found on the frame.

Melinda Vickers recorded her third straight win in net stopping five shots. Roxanne Myers stopped six shots for the Scarlet Hawks.

The Bluejays return to conference play riding a three-game winning streak. They welcome Illinois Wesleyan University to Langhorst Field Saturday, October 25.
