CHICAGO, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team improved to 2-1 in the CCIW after scoring a 25-8, 25-15, 25-23 road victory at North Park University.
Elmhurst, ranked eighth in the latest AVCA Division III poll, improved to 25-4 on the season. North Park slipped to 8-16 overall and 0-3 in league play with the loss.
Elmhurst jumped all over North Park in the opening set, scoring eight of the first nine points to open up a commanding 8-1 lead. The Bluejays never looked back, leading by as many as 15 points and putting the set away with a 25-8 win. Elmhurst hit .533 for the set with nine kills and just one error in 15 attacks.
The second set was nearly identical to the first as Elmhurst won nine of the first 10 points to grab a 10-1 cushion. Elmhurst led by as many 12 points before
Shannon Burns registered a kill to end the set at 25-15.
North Park took advantage of multiple Elmhurst mistakes in the third set to open up a 22-16 lead. Elmhurst committed a combined 12 attack and service errors in the third set. Trailing by six, Elmhurst ripped off a 6-0 run to pull even at 22-22. North Park went up 23-22 on an Elmhurst error, but kills from
Jackie Pavilonis and
Melissa Nava gave Elmhurst a match point at 24-23. A kill from
Hannah Nimrick put the match away for the Bluejays.
Elmhurst finished the match hitting .242 with 39 kills and 17 errors in 91 attempts. North Park finished the match hitting -.031 with 18 kills and 21 errors in 96 swings.
Pavilonis led a balanced Elmhurst attack, finishing with nine kills and six blocks. Nimrick finished with eight kills, 25 assists, seven digs and four blocks.
Sam Szarmach and Nava totaled seven kills apiece. Szarmach added 11 digs in the win. Burns chipped in with six kills and three aces for the Bluejays while
Peggy Clemens led the squad in digs with 12.
Monalisa Pasavalu led North Park with seven kills and seven digs in the loss. Sa'Vone Williams and Hayley Brake added four kills apiece in the loss.
Elmhurst travels to Carthage College on Friday, October 17.
