Bluejays Edge Carthage in Double Overtime!

Box Score KENOSHA, Wis. – Joe Camiliere accounted for three touchdowns and Josh Williams rushed for three more to lead the Elmhurst football team to a 49-42 double overtime victory at Carthage College.
 
Elmhurst improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the CCIW with the victory while Carthage slipped to 2-3 and 1-1 in league play.

The game was a tale of two halves as Elmhurst dominated the scoreboard for the first 30 minutes and Carthage controlled the scoreboard in the game's second half.
 
Elmhurst led 35-14 at the break after scoring five times in the opening 30 minutes. Carthage jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, taking the opening kickoff and driving 73 yards with Nick Anzelmo capping the drive with a two-yard touchdown run. The Bluejays needed just seconds to respond as Tyler Smith returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown to pull Elmhurst even at 7-7.
 
The Red Men's defense put points on the scoreboard midway through the first quarter. Greg Money recovered an Elmhurst fumble and raced 32 yards to the end zone to put the Red Men on top 14-7.
 
Elmhurst responded immediately, driving 75 yards on its ensuing possession and capping the scoring drive with a 12-yard pass from Camiliere to Kaylon Miller.

The Bluejays' defense stepped up on the next Carthage possession as Anthony Beltrano picked off Anzelmo and brought the ball back to the Carthage 34-yard line at the end of the first quarter. Camiliere hit Miller on a 34-yard strike to give Elmhurst its first lead of the day at 21-14.
 
Elmhurst extended its lead midway through the second quarter. The Bluejays drove 60 yards to the end zone with Williams finishing the scoring drive with a five-yard touchdown plunge.
 
The Bluejays tacked one last score before halftime. A poor punt by Carthage gave Elmhurst the ball at their own 49-yard line. Camiliere broke free for a 31-yard run on the Bluejays' first play, and Williams scored on a 20-yard run on the next play to give Elmhurst a 35-14 cushion at the half.
 
Carthage used big plays from its defense to fight its way back into the game in the second half. Richard Motter picked off Camiliere deep inside Carthage territory and returned the ball 63 yards to the Elmhurst 13-yard line. Four plays later, Derek Bellamy scored on a two-yard run to cut Elmhurst's lead down to 35-21.
 
The Bluejays drove down to the Carthage 31-yard line, eating up over nine minutes of the third quarter, but Elmhurst failed to convert on fourth down, giving the Red Men the ball back at their own 35-yard line. After a 55-yard pass from Anzelmo to James Cobbs to key the drive, Anzelmo hit Tyler Walsh on a five-yard touchdown pass to pull the Red Men to within seven points with 13 minutes left to play.
 
Motter turned in another key play for Carthage, blocking Elmhurst's punt and recovering the ball at Elmhurst's 11 yard line. The Red Men capitalized as Anzelmo hit Jamahl Wright on a seven-yard touchdown pass to even the score at 25-25.
 
After Elmhurst was forced to punt on its next possession, Carthage drove down to the Elmhurst 33-yard line, but the Bluejays' defense stopped the Red Men on fourth down, giving Elmhurst's offense the ball back at its own 33-yard line with 3:21 left.
 
The Bluejays marched down to the Carthage 15-yard line and set up for a field goal attempt in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter. Carthage's Zac Pallissard blocked Brett Bayer's 32-yard attempt to send the game to overtime.
 
Carthage struck first in the first overtime. Anzelmo plunged into the end zone from a yard out to put the Red Men up 42-35. Elmhurst needed just one play to send the game to a second overtime as Williams scored untouched on a 25-yard run to even the score at 42-all.

Elmhurst started the second overtime on offense and quickly scored. Camiliere hit Garrett Claxon for a 23-yard pick up down to the Carthage two-yard line. After a one-yard run from Williams, Camiliere plunged up the middle for a one-yard score, giving Elmhurst a 49-42 cushion.
 
After an incompletion on first down, Carthage was flagged for holding on second down, backing the Red Men up to the 35-yard line. Carthage got 10 yards back on a short completion but Anzelmo threw back-to-back incomplete passes to the end zone on third and fourth down allowing the Bluejays to seal the victory.
 
Elmhurst totaled 450 yards of offense in the win and controlled the clock, possessing the ball for over 41 minutes. The Bluejays rushed for 282 yards while passing for 168. Carthage finished the contest with 332 yards of offense. The Bluejays limited the Red Men to only 82 rushing yards.
 
Williams led Elmhurst's ground attack, rushing 41 times for 249 yards and three touchdowns. The 249 yards is the third-highest single-game total in Elmhurst history. Camiliere finished 13-of-17 for 168 yards and two touchdowns through the air. He also rushed 13 times for 33 yards and a score. Claxon hauled in six passes for 61 yards while Miller caught four passes for a team-leading 75 yards and one touchdown.
 
Bellamy led Carthage on the ground with 39 yards on 13 carries. Anzelmo passed for 250 yards and two touchdowns while completing 17-of-37 passes. Cobbs was the Red Men's top receiver, catching six passes for 140 yards.
 
Billy Viero led Elmhurst's defense in the win with five tackles. Jake Garabedian, Valdez Honorable, John Eliades, Marvin Carr and Miles Hamblen all totaled four tackles apiece.

Elmhurst will look for its third straight victory next Saturday, October 18, when the Bluejays host North Park University at Langhorst Field.
