Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team dropped its opening game of the CCIW schedule after falling to third-ranked Illinois Wesleyan 104-73 at R.A. Faganel Hall.
Elmhurst (8-4, 0-1 CCIW) couldn't withstand a barrage of three-pointers from the red-hot shooting of Illinois Wesleyan (11-1, 1-0 CCIW). The Titans rained down 16 three-pointers in the contest, shooting 55.2 percent (16-of-29) from long distance. Eight different Titans connected on three-pointers in the contest.
The two teams slugged it out for the first four minutes of the contest, before the Titans used a 12-2 run to turn a five-point deficit into a five-point lead. Illinois Wesleyan extended their lead to double digits, opening up a 14-point cushion on a three-pointer from Jordan Nelson. Elmhurst closed to within nine points, but a 5-0 run to finish the half put Illinois Wesleyan up 50-36 at the half.
The Titans quickly pushed their lead up to 18 points early in the second half, before an 8-0 run by Elmhurst brought the Bluejays to within 10 points with 13:42 left to play. Leading 72-60 with 10:20 left on the clock, the Titans closed the contests on a 32-13 run to score the 31-point victory.
Illinois Wesleyan finished the game shooting a blistering 53.1 percent (34-of-64) from the floor, including 55.2 percent from long range. The Titans also won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Elmhurst 44-29 and turning 14 offensive rebounds into 30 second-chance points.
Elmhurst finished the contest hitting 42.4 percent (28-of-66) of its shots, including 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from beyond the arc.
Taylor Baxter paced the Bluejays in the loss with 15 points and three assists.
Nick Sanford added 3 points and five rebounds while
Pat Coleman scored 11 for the Bluejays.
Will Nixon finished with nine points for the Bluejays.
Five players reached double figures in scoring for the TItans. Andrew Ziemnik and Victor Davis led the charge with 18 points apiece. Davis totaled a double-double with 11 rebounds while Ziemnik pulled down nine. Pat Sodemann and Nelson finished with 14 points apiece while Michael Mayberger scored 11.
Elmhurst travels to Wheaton College on Wednesday, January 8.
