Tennis Team Splits Pair of Matches

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's tennis team split a pair of contests at the Brune Tennis Courts, falling to St. Norbert College before rebounding to defeat St. Joseph's College.

Elmhurst (3-1 overall) opened the day with a 6-3 loss to St. Norbert before edging St. Joseph's 5-4 in the afternoon.

ST. NORBERT 6, ELMHURST 3 - Elmhurst opened the match with a pair of wins in doubles competition, but St. Norbert (4-1) took five of the six singles matches to earn the three-point victory.

Cassie Kovach and Meg Griffin teamed to defeat Nancy Chybowski and Erika Chitko 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Annie Duggan and Nicole Darga followed with a 9-8 win over Maggie Berens and Elizabeth Manlick at No. 2 doubles. St. Norbert took the No. 3 doubles match with Katherine Ake and Ashley Randazzo downing Elmhurst's Jennifer Guenther and Kayla Mangiapane 8-0.

Kovach downed Chybowski 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, but the Green Knights won the next five singles matches to earn the win. Chitko toppled Duggan 6-3, 6-2 at No. singles while Manlick blanked Darga 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Ake defeated Griffin 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles while Ariel Bloniarz defeated Brittany Kuehn 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Brittany Dudzik closed out singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Guenther at No. 6 singles.

ELMHURST 5, ST. JOSEPH'S 4 -  Elmhurst salvaged a split on the day with a 5-4 win over St. Joseph's. The Bluejays took two of the doubles matches while splitting the three singles contests to earn the win.

Kovach and Griffin stopped Cynthia Keagley and Katie Guernsey 8-2 at No. 1 doubles while the duo of Duggan and Darga downed Clare Kosh and Tate Hickey 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. St. Joseph's Kendall Shinn and Vanessa Olson combined for an 8-6 win over Lauren Kuehn and Guenther at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Duggan, Darga and Griffin scored wins for the Bluejays to lift the squad to the win. Duggan downed Guernsey 6-3, 7-6 at No. 2 singles while Darga followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kost at No. 3 doubles. Griffin sealed the win for the Bluejays with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Shinn at No. 3 singles.

St. Joseph's Keagley downed Kovach 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 singles while Olson stopped Brittany Kuehn 7-6, 7-6 at No. 5 singles. Hickey defeated Mangiapane 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.

Elmhurst hosts Wheaton College on Tuesday, September 10.
