ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's tennis team dropped its first CCIW contest of the season, falling to Wheaton College 8-1.
Elmhurst slipped to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in league play while Wheaton moved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the victory.
Wheaton opened the contest by sweeping the three doubles contests. Sarah Ray and Julie Buursma defeated the Bluejays' duo of
Annie Duggan and
Meg Griffin 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Emily Jones and Erika Nelson toppled
Nicole Darga and
Brittany Kuehn 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. Wheaton's team of Katherine Kaiser and Taylor Parrish downed
Lauren Kuehn and
Jennifer Guenther 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Wheaton won the first five matches before Elmhurst got on the scoreboard. Ray downed Duggan 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while Buursma stopped Darga 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Jones defeated Griffin 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles while Nelson dispatched
Brittany Kuehn 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Kaiser defeated
Lauren Kuehn 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
Kayla Mangiapane prevented the shutout for Elmhurst with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Parrish at No. 6 singles.
The Bluejays travel to Illinois Wesleyan on Sunday, September 15.
