Box Score 2 ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst baseball team fell to 18-19 overall after dropping pair of one-run contests to North Central College. The Bluejays fell 3-2 in game one and dropped a 6-5 decision in 10 innings in game two.
NORTH CENTRAL 3, ELMHURST 2 - North Central jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held off the Bluejays to win the opening game of the doubleheader by a 3-2 final score.
The Cardinals Kevin Hennessy cracked a two-run homer in the first and and Matt Brancato added an RBI single in the third to put North Central on top 3-0.
Elmhurst cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth when
Luke Collins laced a double down the left field line to drive in
Zach Tsiodras. The Bluejays pulled to within a run in the sixth inning when
Eric Stevenson knocked home a run with an RBI single. The Bluejays stranded the tying run on second to end the sixth and were retired in order in the seventh to end the contest.
Stevenson finished 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI to lead the Bluejays at the plate.
Brian Marquis (2-5) took the loss despite pitching a complete game. He scattered seven hits and three runs over the seven inning contest.
North Central's Jon Rashid earned the win, working seven innings and allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out six.
NORTH CENTRAL 6, ELMHURST 5 - North Central scored a pair of runs in the top of the tenth and held off the Bluejays in the bottom of the inning to finish the sweep of the doubleheader with a 6-5 win in extra innings.
Elmhurst jumped on the scoreboard first, taking a 1-0 lead on Collins' RBI double to center. The Cardinals answered back with four runs in th fifth.
The Bluejays responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles from
Tyler Wargo,
Dave Wolak and Tsiodras.
The game remained knotted at four until the 10th inning when back-to-back doubles from Vito DeRango and Sam Klein gave the Cardinals a 6-4 lead.
Brian Marquis' RBI single pulled the Bluejays to within a run and moved the tying run to third with just one out in the bottom of the 10th, but a strikeout and a line out ended the game for North Central.
Brian Evans, Wolak and Marquis collected two hits apiece in the loss.
Jeff Guzzi took the loss in relief for the Bluejays. Guzzi allowed six hits and two runs in 3.2 innings of work. He walked one and struck out two.
Elmhurst closes out the 2013 season by playing at North Central on Sunday (May 5).
