Bluejays Rally Past Wheaton in Late Innings

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - Luke Collins sparked a seven-run eighth inning with a grand slam as the Elmhurst baseball team rallied past Wheaton for an 8-6 victory.

The game was resumed in the bottom of the fifth with Elmhurst trailing 5-1 after rain halted the contest last Monday (April 15).

Wheaton built a 5-1 lead last week with a pair of runs in the first inning and added a run in the fourth. Elmhurst got on the scoreboard in the fourth on a Tyler Wargo RBI single. The Thunder responded with two runs in the top of the fifth on Taylor Howe's two-run single.

Wheaton tacked on a run in the top of the sixth to take a 6-1 advantage.

The Bluejays mounted a rally in the eighth, cashing in on Wheaton pitchers' wildness. The Bluejays scored seven runs on just four hits in the inning.

A one out single and a pair of walks loaded the bases for the Bluejays. Collins pulled Elmhurst to within a run as he cracked a grand slam down the left field line.

With one one and two out, Eric Stevenson was hit by a pitch and Brian Evans drew a walk to load the bases. Joe Kennedy walked to force home a run and tie the game. Dave Wolak put Elmhurst on top for the first time in the contest by lining a two-run single to center field.

Wheaton put the tying runs in scoring position to start the ninth inning, but Erik Swanson pitched out of the jam to record his second save of the season.

Wolak finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs driven in. Collins and Zach Tsiodras collected two hits apiece in the victory.

Ryan Millan earned the win in relief, working three innings and allowing just one hit and one unearned run. He walked two and struck out one.

Elmhurst hosts the University of Chicago tomorrow (April 23) at Butterfield Park.
