Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst baseball team dropped its seventh straight contest, falling 8-7 in 10 innings to Carthage College.
Elmhurst (12-14, 4-9 CCIW) fell behind 1-0 early but the Bluejays jumped on top with a five-run outburst in the fourth inning.
Joe Kennedy doubled home a pair of runs with one out and
Luke Collins followed with a three-run homer to left field to give Elmhurst a 5-1 lead.
Carthage (15-14, 8-7 CCIW) sliced into the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth, but the Bluejays responded with RBI singles from
Dave Wolak and
Zach Tsiodras to reclaim a four-run cushion.
Carthage took advantage of a debated call to tie the score with three runs in the seventh. With two out and one on, Stevo Kraynak popped a low liner to third. The Bluejays thought they had ended the inning with a catch, but the umpires ruled the ball hit the ground before it was caught allowing Kraynak to reach first. After a single loaded the bases, Drew Bailey ripped a double to right field to tie the game.
Carthage's Nick Schmidlkofer cracked a solo homer in the 10th inning to give the Red Men the victory.
Tyler Wargo collected three hits and scored two runs for the Bluejays in the loss. Kennedy and Tsiodras finished with two hits apiece.
Erik Swanson suffered the loss in relief for the Bluejays, surrendering the solo shot to Schmidlkoer in the 10th.
Jordan Hanlon made the start for the Bluejays and lasted 6.2 innings. He allowed 12 hits and four earned runs while striking out three.
Elmhurst will resume a game against Wheaton College on Monday (April 22).
