Baseball Team Drops Doubleheader to Illinois Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst baseball team slipped to 4-5 in CCIW play after dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Illinois Wesleyan University. The Bluejays fell 10-6 in game one and dropped the night cap 8-1.

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 10, ELMHURST 6 - Illinois Wesleyan scored nine runs over the final three inning to turn a 1-0 lead into a 10-6 victory.

The Titans' Kevin Callahan cracked a two-run homer in the seventh to put IWU on top 4-0. A two-run shot from Boby Czarnowski made it 6-0 in favor of the Titans in the eighth inning.

Illinois Wesleyan's Tim Hart had a perfect game through 6.1 innings before Joe Kennedy singled to become Elmhurst's first base runner in the seventh inning.  Elmhurst (12-10 overall)  took advantage of a pair of Illinois Wesleyan errors in the eighth to score four unearned runs. Kennedy singled home a run and Dave Wolak drove home a pair with a single to pull the Bluejays to within two.

The Titans plated four runs in the top of the ninth to extend their lead to 10-4. Elmhurst's Luke Collins belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to make the final score 10-6 in favor of the Titans.

Hart earned the win for Illinois Wesleyan, allowing just two earned runs and seven hits over 8.1 innings of work. Hart improved to 3-1 and struck out six.

Jordan Hanlon took the loss, surrendering 10 hits and four earned runs in seven innings of work. He walked two and struck out two.

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 8, ELMHURST 1 (Game Two) - Illinois Wesleyan scored twice in the fourth and added four runs in the eighth to turn a one-run lead into an 8-1 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan (20-5, 11-0 CCIW) grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Elmhurst evened the score in the bottom of the inning on Zach Tsiodras' sacrifice fly.

The Titans pulled ahead with a run a run in the third and then added two runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. IWU tacked on four insurance runs in the eighth to pull away for the win.

Dave Wolak, Tyler Wargo and Eric Stevenson collected two hits apiece in the loss.

Elmhurst's bats were held in check by IWU's Jeff Johnson (5-0). Johnson worked eight innings and scattered nine hits and one earned run while striking out 11. Anthony Kopp tossed a scoreless ninth inning, fanning two in the process.

Jeff Guzzi (0-1) took the loss for Elmhurst. Guzzi surrendered eight hits and four runs over seven innings of work. He walked three and struck out one.

Elmhurst plays the final game of the three-game series at Illinois Wesleyan on Sunday (April 14).
