Baseball Team Splits CCIW Openers at Augustana

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MOLINE, Ill. - The Elmhurst baseball team kicked off the CCIW portion of its schedule by splitting a doubleheader at Augustana College. The Bluejays won the opening contest 4-3 before falling 6-5 in the night cap.

ELMHURST 4, AUGUSTANA 3 (Game One) -- Elmhurst scored three runs in the first and plaed the game winner in the eighth to score a one-run win in game one.

Elmhurst played three runs in the first with RBIs from Dave Wolak, Zach Tsiodras and Brian Marquis.

Augustana scored a run in the second, fourth and seventh to pull even, but the Bluejays scored the go ahead run in the eighth. Tyler Wargo led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a balk. After moving to third on Greg Struck's single, Wargo scored on Lucas Spezia's fielder's choice grounder.

Jordan Hanlon limited the Vikings to only three runs and nine hits over 6.1 innings of work. He struck out two while not issuing a walk, taking home a no-decision in the process. Brian Cvitkovich picked up the win in relief, tossing the final 2.2 innings and surrendering just one hit.

AUGUSTANA 6, ELMHURST 5 - Augustana rallied from a 5-3 deficit over the final two innings to salvage a split in the doubleheader.

The Bluejays led 5-3 after seven innings, cashing in two Augustana errors for three unearned runs. Elmhurst went on top 5-3 in the top of the seventh on Wargo's RBI double.

Augustana answered back in the bottom of the eighth, taking advantage of an Elmhurst error to score a pair of unearned runs.

The Bluejays threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with just one out, but a strikeout and ground out ended Elmhurst's scoring chances.

A two-out Elmhurst error in the bottom of the ninth allowed Augustana to score the game-winning run.

Wargo finished the game 3-of-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI. Brian Evans and Joe Kennedy collected two hits apiece in the loss.

Jeff Guzzi made the start and took a no-decision, working six innings and allowing three earned runs and nine hits. He struck out five while not issuing a walk. Erik Swanson took the loss in relief, working 1.1 innings and allowing just one hit and one unearned run.

The final game of the three game series, originally scheduled for March 30 at Butterfield Park, has been postponed. The Bluejays will play at Wheaton College on April 2.
