Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. - Bryant Ackerman hit a game-tying three-pointer at the end of regulation and scored a career-high 28 points while helping the Elmhurst men's basketball team to a 102-100 triple overtime win at North Park.
Leading by three at halftime, Elmhurst (6-17, 2-10 CCIW) fell behind by six points with just a minute to play in the contest, but rallied to send the game to overtime. Down 74-68 with 1:03 remaining,
Nick Sanford hit a free throw to cut the lead down to five. Sanford missed his second attempt, but
Taylor Baxter grabbed the loose ball. Ackerman hit a pair of free throws on the second-chance attempt to slice the Vikings' lead down to three with 52 seconds left to play.
North Park (6-17, 1-11 CCIW) wound the shot clock down and missed a three-pointer with 20 seconds left. Ackerman missed a game-tying three-point attempt with six seconds to play with the ball going out of bounds to North Park. The Vikings were unable to inbound the ball and Elmhurst capitalized on the turnover as Ackerman drilled a three-pointer with three seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
Both teams struggled in the first overtime as each team managed just four points. The Vikings led 78-74 with 3:26 left, but a three-point play from Sanford cut the lead down to one with 1:56 left. Sanford tied the score with a free throw with 59 seconds remaining, but both team's missed shots in the final 30 seconds to force a second overtime.
In the second OT, the Bluejays jumped out to a 78-73 lead, but North Park's Chris Benjamin hit a lay-up with 14 seconds left to knot the score at 87 and force a third overtime.
Elmhurst led by three with 1:20 left in the third overtime, but North Park's Zach Cassita hit a three-pointer with 56 seconds left to even the score. Ackerman delivered another clutch three-pointer with the shot clock winding down to put Elmhurst on top 99-96 with 22 seconds left on the clock. North Park sliced the lead down to one on a pair of free throws from Mark Holmes, but Sanford connected on two free throws with eight seconds left to give the Bluejays a 101-98 lead.
Cassita split a pair of free throws with six ticks left to trim Elmhurst's lead down to two points. Ackerman followed by splitting a pair of free throws with five seconds left to give Elmhurst a 102-99 lead. Cassita was fouled with two seconds left and hit his first free throw attempt. Cassita missed the second attempt, but the ball was last touched by Elmhurst and went out of bounds to the Vikings. Cassita's three-point attempt came up short as the Bluejays hung on for the 102-100 win.
Elmhurst finished the game shooting 43.1 percent (31-of-72) from the floor, including 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from beyond the arc. The Bluejays hit 31-of-40 free throws in the contest (77.5 percent). Elmhurst outscored North Park 32-18 in the paint.
Three Bluejays scored over 20 points in the win. Ackerman poured in a career-high 28 points while shooting 7-of-17 from the floor and 12-of-14 from the foul line. He added seven assists and three steals in the win. Sanford finished with a double-double, totaling 26 points and 13 rebounds while
D'Ante Foster totaled 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Kyle Wuest added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Bluejays.
North Park shot 40.0 percent (32-of-80) from the floor, including 36.8 percent (14-of-38) from three-point range. Cassita led the Vikings and all scorers with 34 points, shooting 10-of-20 from the floor and 10-of-13 from the charity stripe. Ryan Hyrn added 27 for the Vikings, hitting 9-of-15 shots, including 6-of-10 from downtown. Chris Benjamin netted 12 points while Reggie McGee scored 11 and Holmes added 10.
Elmhurst hosts Augustana College next Saturday (February 16).
