Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's basketball team rallied but came up short in a 71-67 loss at Carthage College.
Elmhurst (5-17, 1-10 CCIW) fell behind by 12 at the half and trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half. Trailing by nine with 6:22 remaining, Elmhurst used a 7-0 run to pull to within two points (64-62) with 3:27 left. Carthage (11-11, 5-5 CCIW) extended its lead to five on three free throws, before the Bluejays used three straight points to pull to within two points with 46 seconds left.
Carthage's Marlon Senior hit a lay-up to put the Red Men up 69-65 with 17 seconds left.
D'Ante Foster answered with a jumper with 10 seconds left to pull Elmhurst within two, but Mitch Thompson sealed the game for Carthage by hitting a pair of free throws.
Elmhurst finished the game, shooting 42.3 percent (22-of-52) from the field, including 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from downtown. Carthage shot only 39.6 percent (21-of-54) from the field and just 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from beyond the arc. The Red Men hit 25-of-35 shots (71.4 percent) from the foul line.
Bryant Ackerman came off the bench to lead the Bluejays with 17 points while knocking down 4-of-7 from three-point range.
Nick Sanford added 15 points and a team-leading eight rebounds. Foster finished with 14 points and
Kyle Wuest also reached double figures with 13 points.
Carthage was led by Thompson's 22-point effort while shooting 7-of-11 from the field. Reese Herth added 13 points and Tyler Pierce added 10 for the Red Men.
Elmhurst travels to North Park University on Saturday, February 9.
