Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's basketball team battled with Augustana but came up short, falling 66-61 at R.A. Faganel Hall.
Elmhurst (6-18, 2-11 CCIW) and Augustana (17-7, 7-6 CCIW) exchanged leads four times in the opening half, with the Bluejays leading 29-25 at the half. Elmhurst shot a blistering 54.2 percent (13-of-24) in the opening 20 minutes while Augustana struggled, shooting just 25.0 percent (8-of-32).
The two squads continued to slug it out in the second half, before a three-pointer from
D'Ante Foster and a tip-in from
Erik Dornfeld gave Elmhurst a 44-39 lead with 11:29 left on the clock. Augustana responded with a 14-5 run over the next five minutes to take a 53-49 lead. Elmhurst cut the lead down to two-points on three occasions, but Augustana answered back every time.
A three-pointer from
Kyle Wuest brought Elmhurst to within a bucket with 1:21 left, but Brandon Kunz hit a lay-up for Augustana with 52 seconds remaining to put the Vikings up by four. Elmhurst closed to within two points again on two free throws from Wuest, but the Vikings hit four free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach.
Elmhurst finished the game shooting 46.9 percent (23-of-49) from the floor, including 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from three-point range. Augustana finished the contest shooting 36.2 percent (21-of-58) after shooting 50.0 percent (13-of-26) in the second half. The Vikings won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Elmhurst 37-33.
Wuest and
Nick Sanford totaled 11 points apiece to lead the Bluejays.
Bryant Ackerman chipped in with 10 points while Foster scored nine.
Alex Morgunov added eight points for the Bluejays.
Ben Ryan paced Augustana with a game-high 21 points, shooting 8-of-16 from the floor. Danielius Jurgutis added 14 and Tayvian Johnson chipped in with 13 points for the Vikings.
Elmhurst wraps up the 2012-13 season next Tuesday by hosting Wheaton College.
