WHEATON, Ill. - The Elmhurst wrestling team slipped to 1-1 on the season after dropping a CCIW dual meet at Wheaton College 30-14.
Elmhurst won four of the 10 contests while Wheaton scored six victories.
The Bluejays started quickly, winning three of the first four matches, but Wheaton rattled off five straight victories, including two by pin and one by technical fall to take control of the dual.
Elmhurst's
Tyler Price opened the dual with a 16-14 decision over Tom Foy at 125 pounds.
Miguel Venecia followed with a 15-2 major decision over Wheaton's Gregory Manfredi to put the Bluejays on top 7-0. Wheaton's Jared Fekete pinned Matt Quigly in 4:46 at 141 pounds to put the Thunder on the scoreboard. Elmhurst's
Ryan Prater dominated Wheaton's William Byrd, at 149 pounds, winning by a 17-0 technical fall to put Elmhurst on top 12-6.
Wheaton's Mark Savenok pinned Nick DiNardo in 5:05 at 157 pounds to even the dual score at 12. The Thunder's Stehepn Aiello followed with a 15-0 technical fall over Elmhurst's
Steve Myers at 165 pounds to give the Thunder a 17-12 lead. Wheaton's Matt McCrary pinned Stehen Kunca in 25 seconds at 174 pounds.
The Thunder's Dan Olsen and Elmhurst's
Danny Balderas wrestled to a 2-2 tie after regulation, but Olsen scored a takedown in overtime to earn the win at 184 pounds. The Thunder's Mitch Steed defeated Elmhurst's
Bryce Sellers 12-3 at 197 pounds. The Bluejays'
Danny Vargas closed the dual with a 4-1 decision over Wheaton's Taylor Gohn at 285 pounds to make the final score 30-14 in favor of Wheaton (Elmhurst was deducted one team point).
The Bluejays will wrestle at the Concordia University (Wis.) Open on Saturday, November 23.
