Box Score ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Elmhurst football team slid to 1-4 on the season after suffering a 28-17 loss at Augustana College.
Missed chances and a pair of turnovers proved costly to the Bluejays.
Elmhurst had good field position in the opening quarter after
Mark Evangelista stripped Augustana's Samuel Frasco and
Robbie Dunn recovered the ball at the Augustana 45. The Bluejays drove to the Vikings' 30-yard line, but
David Tomis' 47-yard field goal attempt missed wide right.
After forcing Augustana (3-2, 1-1 CCIW) into a three-and-out, the Bluejays took over at their own 33-yard line and scored four plays later.
Josh Williams broke loose for a 54-yard touchdown run to give the Bluejays a 7-0 lead.
Augustana answered back near the start of the second quarter with a nine-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 20-yard touchdown run from Frasco.
After an interception and a punt, Augustana took the lead late in the second quarter. Nick Krantz capped off a 51-yard drive with a 21-yard touchdown run.
Elmhurst QB
Logan Stelzriede was picked off on the Bluejays' next play with the Vikings taking over at the Elmhurst 46-yard line with just 1:25 left on the clock. The Vikings needed only one play to pad their lead as Frasco raced into the end zone on a 46-yard keeper to give the Vikings a 21-7 lead at the half.
The Bluejays sliced into the lead to open the second half with an impressive 13-play, 67-yard scoring drive. Stelzriede plunged into the end zone from a yard out to cap off the drive.
Elmhurst pulled even closer at the start of the fourth quarter. The Bluejays drove down to the Augustana nine-yard line, but had to settle for a 28-yard field goal from Tomis to pull to within four points.
Augustana answered the Bluejays' drive with a seven-play, 71-yard scoring drive. Eric Chandler finished the drive with a one-yard touchdown run.
Elmhurst drove down to the Vikings 29-yard line on its next possession, but the drive stalled and the Bluejays turned the ball over on downs. Elmhurst got the ball back right back after the Bluejays forced a three-and-out, but Elmhurst's offense stalled at their own 31-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
Augustana finished with 393 yards of offense while the Bluejays totaled 315 yards. The Bluejays rushed for 196 yards on 40 carries while passing for 119 yards. Augustana rushed for 286 yards and tacked on 107 through the air.
Williams led the Bluejays on the ground with 84 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Stelzriede added 62 yards on 16 carries while finishing 14-of-32 through the air for 119 yards.
The Bluejays struggled to contain Frasco as the Vikings' QB accounted for 279 yards. Frasco rushed for 172 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 19 carries and finished 12-of-18 through the air for 107 yards. Chandler added 61 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.
Eddie Beyer led the Bluejays' defense with six tackles, including two tackles for loss.
Stephen Ritter added six stops, including 1.5 tackles for loss.
Elmhurst will look to end its four-game skid next Saturday, October 19, when the team travels to Wheaton College.
