Bluejays Down Big Blue For First CCIW Win

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's basketball team scored its first CCIW victory of the season by upending Millikin University 68-61 at R.A. Faganel Hall.

Elmhurst (5-15, 1-8 CCIW) snapped an eight-game losing streak while also dealing Millikin (7-13, 3-6 CCIW) its sixth consecutive loss.

Elmhurst led 24-21 at the half and the two squads exchanged buckets and leads early in the second. Millikin surged in front 34-32 on a Deavis Johnson free throw with 15:30 remaining, but Elmhurst responded with a 14-2 run over the next 3:30 to open up a 46-36 lead. Millikin chipped the lead down to eight points with 8:38 left, but Elmhurst scored seven straight points to extend their advantage to 15 points with 6:31 left on the clock.

Millikin crept back into the contest, shaving the Bluejays' lead to down to just six points (63-57) with 2:30 to go. The Big Blue closed to within one point (64-59) with 1:32 remaining, but the Bluejays sealed the game from the foul line, hitting four of their final six attempts to earn the 68-61 win.

Elmhurst finished the contest shooting 42.3 percent from the floor (22-of-52), including 53.8 percent (14-of-26) in the second half. Millikin shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the field, including 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from downtown. The Bluejays dominated Millikin on the glass, outrebounding the Big Blue 47-30.

Free throws played a big part in the outcome of the contest as the Bluejays finished the game shooting 21-of-31 (66.7 percent) from the foul line. Millikin struggled all game long from the foul line, hitting just 7-of-22 attempts to finish the contest at 31.8 percent.

Nick Sanford led the Bluejays in the victory, scoring a game-high 21 points and ripping down a game-high 16 boards to finish with a double-double.

D'Ante Foster finished with 16 points for the Blueajys while Bryant Ackerman came off the bench to finish with 14 points, including 11 in the seond half. Kyle Wuest added six points and a team-leading five assists in the win.

Millikin was led by Chase Robbins' 17 points and five assists. Elijah Kinmon added 13 points while Deavis Johnson came off the bench to record a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Elmhurst travels to North Central College on Saturday (February 2).
