Bluejays Downed By Titans in 11 Innings

Box Score CAROL STREAM, Ill. - After encountering a two-hour rain delay and moving to a new venue, the Elmhurst baseball team closed out its regular season with a 7-4 loss to Illinois Wesleyan University in 11 innings.

Originally scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start at Butterfield Park, the game was moved to Wheaton College's Lee Pfund stadium due to poor field conditions. A thunder storm in Wheaton delayed the start until 3:15 p.m.

Illinois Wesleyan (26-13, 12-9 CCIW) scored three times in the top of the 11th and pitched out of a bases loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the frame to score the victory.

The Titans jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring twice in the first and plating a run in the second.

Elmhurst (22-18, 11-10 CCIW) pulled to within a run in the bottom of the third. The Bluejays loaded the bases with no outs. The Bluejays scored a run on Tim Nolan's fielder's choice ground ball. Tyler Wargo added a two-out, run-scoring single for the Bluejays.

The Titans added an insurance run in the seventh. With two outs and a runner at third, Bobby Czarnowski grounded to second. Czarnowski was called out at first, but after a conference, the umpires ruled that Elmhurst had come off the bag and called Czarnowski safe with the runner at third scoring on the play.

The Bluejays got a run back in the bottom of the eighth when Wargo singled, stole second, and scored on Jake Bronkema's RBI single.

The Bluejays evened the score in the top of the ninth. With runners at first and second and one down, Dave Wolak grounded to third. The Titans forced out Zach Hofer at second, but Kevin Idstein's attempt at turning a double play, sailed wide, allowing Brian Evans to come home and score the tying run.

The Titans threated in the 10th inning with runners at second and third and one out, but Idstein flied out to right and Wolak gunned down Czarnowski trying to score at the plate.

Illinois Wesleyan scored three times in the 11th, keyed by a two-run triple from Czarnowski. Elmhurst threatened in the bottom of the 11th as three straight walks loaded the bases for the Bluejays. A strikeout and a double play ended the game for the Titans.

Wargo, Wolak, Evans, and Joe Kennedy collected two hits apiece for Elmhurst.

Joe Luft made the start for Elmhurst and took home a no-decision. Luft allowed just three earned runs and seven hits over eight innings of work. He walked three and struck out five. Brennan McClung took the loss in relief, allowing three runs and four hits in 1.1 innings pitched.

Elmhurst will see the Titans again in the upcoming CCIW Tournament. Illinois Wesleyan earned the second seed with the victory while Elmhurst earned the third seed with the loss. The first round of the CCIW Tournament will be on Thursday (May 10) at North Park University.
