Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - Alex Molek and
Zach Hofer drove in four runs apiece to guide the Elmhurst College baseball team to a 13-3 victory over Carroll University.
With the win, the Bluejays improved to 21-16 on the season, continuing to build on the best single-season record under head coach
Joel Southern.
Elmhurst jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Hofer drove in
Brian Evans on a sacrifice fly. Carroll answered back with a run in the top of the second to knot the score at 1-1.
The Bluejays grabbed the lead in the fourth when
Tim Nolan singled to lead off the frame. Nolan moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a fly out, and scored on another wild pitch.
Elmhurst began to pull away in the fifth inning by sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring five runs. Molek started the scoring by blasting a two-run shot to left. Elmhurst loaded the bases with two outs and scored a pair when
Tyler Wargo cracked a bouncing ball that hit off a Carroll glove and into right field.
Zach Tsiodras added an RBI single to put Elmhurst on top 7-1.
Carroll scored twice in the top of the sixth to pull to within four runs, but Hofer belted a two-run shot over the scoreboard in the left field in the bottom of the sixth to establish a 9-3 lead.
Elmhurst put the game away in the bottom of the seventh with four runs. Molek ripped a double to the gap in left center to drive in a pair of runs.
Brian Evans ground ball was booted by the Pioneers allowing a run to score and letting Evans reach first.
Joe Kennedy singled Evans to second and Hofer ended the game with a walk-off single off the center field wall to drive in Evans and give the Bluejays the 10-run, mercy-rule victory.
Molek finished 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. Hofer finished 2-for-3, scored two runs and knocked in four. Evans and
Zach Tsiodras finished with three hits apiece in the win. Evans scored a team-leading four runs while
Tim Nolan also collected two hits.
Alex Van Cleve improved to 1-1 by tossing a complete game. Van Cleve scattered eight hits, one walk, and three runs over seven innings. He struck out two in the win.
Elmhurst travels to Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday (May 5) for a critical CCIW doubleheader with the Titans. Six teams are separated by just two games in the CCIW standings. The top four squads qualify for the conference tournament.
