Box Score 2 DECATUR, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team fell to 4-3 in CCIW play after dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Millikin University. The Bluejays fell 10-9 in game one 10-4 in the nightcap.
MILLIKIN 10, ELMHURST 9 (Game One) - Millikin's Theo Facer smacked a walk-off home run in the top of the ninth to hand Mllikin a 10-9 victory in game one.
Millikin raced out to a 6-1 lead before the Bluejays rallied in the final four innings. Trailing by five,
Marc Shield cracked a three-run blast in the sixth to pull Elmhurst to within two runs. The Bluejays tacked on an unearned run in the frame to close to just a one-run deficit.
Millikin (6-16, 2-5 CCIW) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and added a run in the seventh to extended their lead back to four runs. A wild pitch, an RBI single from
Brian Marquis, and a
Brian Evans sacrifice fly accounted for three Elmhurst runs in the eighth to make the score 9-8 in favor of the Big Blue. Elmhurst evened the score in the ninth on a leadoff solo homer from
Dave Wolak.
Shield paced the Bluejays' offense in the loss, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Wolak collected a pair of hits, scored twice and had an RBI for Elmhurst.
Joe Luft made the start for Elmhurst and took a no-decision. Luft allowed eight hits and six earned runs in six innings of work. He walked three and fanned three.
Joe Ramirez took the loss in relief after surrendering the solo shot to Facer.
MILLIKIN 10, ELMHURST 4 - The Big Blue tagged Elmhurst pitchers for 10 runs and 14 hits while finishing the doubleheader sweep in game two.
Millikin opened up a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Bluejays surged in front with three runs in the fifth. A pair of Millikin wild pitches and an RBI groundout from Evans accounted for Elmhurst's runs in the inning.
The Bluejays' lead was short lived as a solo shot from David Peters and an RBI single from Adam Carlisle put Millikin on top 4-3 after five innings.
The Big Blue scored a run in the sixth and seventh innings to to extend their lead to 6-3. The Bluejays added a run in the eighth on an RBI single from Marquis, but Millikin put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Millikin's Logan Bolton shut down Elmhurst's bats, holding the Bluejays to only six hits and three earned runs over 7.1 innings of work. Kyle Davidson pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief to record the save.
Jordan Hanlon took the loss for the Bluejays after surrendering eight hits and four earned runs in six innings.
Elmhurst will try to salvage the final game of the three-game series tomorrow (Saturday, April 7).
