Box Score 2 ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team upped its CCIW record to 4-1 on the season by sweeping a doubleheader from Wheaton College. The Bluejays won game one 4-2 and then took the nightcap 6-4.
ELMHURST 4, WHEATON 2 - Brian Marquis tossed a complete game and the Elmhurst offense banged out 10 hits en route to a 4-2 victory.
Trailing 1-0, the Bluejays pushed home a run to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning.
Zach Tsiodras doubled to lead off the frame. After being sacrificed to third, Tsiodras scored on a ground ball off the bat of
Joe Ramirez.
Elmhurst (12-6 overall) jumped on top in the fourth inning. A pair of singles gave the Bluejays runners at first and second with two outs.
Joe Kennedy delivered a run-scoring single to give Elmhurst its first lead off the game.
The Bluejays pushed their lead to 3-1 in the sixth. With runners on the corners and one out, Kennedy beat out the return throw on a possible double play, allowing
Tim Nolan to score in the process.
Wheaton (11-10, 1-4 CCIW) pulled to within a run in the seventh, but the Bluejays answered right back in the bottom half of the seventh. Ramirez led off with a bunt single and promptly stole second. Ramirez moved to third on
Brian Evans' single and scored on a sacrifice fly from
Luke Collins.
Marquis scattered eight hits while tossing a complete game for the Bluejays. Marquis allowed just two runs and one walk while fanning one and improving to 2-1 on the season.
ELMHURST 6, WHEATON 4 - The Bluejays completed the doubleheader sweep of the Thunder with a 6-4 win in game two.
Elmhurst jumped on the scoreboard in the second inning with three runs. Collins doubled home a run to start the scoring while Evans added an RBI single.
Tyler Wargo also pushed home a run on a fielder's choice grounder.
Wheaton responded with two runs in the second and a run in the third to knot the score at 3-3. The Bluejays retook the lead in the fourth inning with an unearned run.
Joe Ramirez reached base on a leadoff error and scored on
Dave Wolak's fielder's choice grounder.
The Bluejays tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth to open up a three-run cushion. Wolak tripled home Evans and then came around to score on an RBI single from Kennedy.
Wheaton pulled to within two runs in the seventh. The Thunder loaded the bases with two outs and Desmond Cato delivered an RBI single, but Wolak gunned down Alex MaLossi at the plate trying to score from second.
Kennedy collected three hits in the win while Collins finished with a pair of doubles. Evans and Wargo each finished with two hits and an RBI.
Bryan Baker made the start for the Bluejays and earned the win. Baker worked five innings and allowed seven hits and three runs. He walked five and fanned four.
Brennan McClung finished up in relief to earn the save. McClung pitched the final four frames, scattering three hits, four walks, and one run. He struck out one.
Elmhurst travels to Millikin University on Friday (April 6).
