Box Score 2 ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team moved to 16-13 overall and 8-6 in CCIW play after splitting a doubleheader with Carthage College. The Bluejays dropped the opener 3-2, but
Dave Parr tossed a complete game in the nightcap, pitching the Bluejays to a 4-2 victory.
CARTHAGE 3, ELMHURST 2 - Carthage (14-13, 6-8 CCIW) broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the eighth inning and held of a ninth inning rally from Elmhurst to score a 3-2 win in game one.
Elmhurst jumped on the scoreboard in the third inning. The Bluejays took advantage of a pair of Carthage errors to load the bases with no outs. After a strikeout,
Dave Wolak blooped a single to center field to put the Bluejays on top 1-0. A double play ended the Elmhurst scoring threat.
Carthage evened the score with a run i the sixth on a Kyle Pusateri RBI single.
The Red Men surged in front in the eighth. Carthage put runners on the corner with one out. On a ground ball up the middle, Elmhurst was able to get the lead runner at second, but the Bluejays were unable to complete the double play and the Red Men took the lead on the play. Chris D'Angelo added an RBI single to give Carthage a 3-1 lead.
Elmhurst sliced the lead down to just a run in the ninth inning when
Brian Marquis blasted a solo homer to right field. The Bluejays put two runners on with two outs, but a strikeout ended the game for Carthage.
Jake Bronkema recorded two hits for Elmhurst in the loss.
Jordan Hanlon took the loss for Elmhurst despite pitching well. Halon worked eight innings and scattered seven hits, one walk, and three runs. He struck out five while dropping to 3-3 on the season.
ELMHURST 4, CARTHAGE 2 - A four-run sixth inning and Parr's pitching performance helped the Bluejays earn the doubleheader split with a 4-2 victory in game two.
Elmhurst broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning.
Tyler Wargo started the scoring with an RBI single. A ground ball from
Zach Tsiodras' bat was mishandled by Carthage leading to an Elmhurst run and allowing Tsiodras to reach first.
Jake Bronkema and
Eric Stevenson added had two-out, run-scoring singles to give Elmhurst a 4-0 lead.
Elmhurst pitcher
Dave Parr sailed through the first seven innings before running into trouble in the eighth. Parr took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before giving up his first hit to the Red Men. In the eighth, Carthage used five hits to score a pair of runs to cut the deficit in half. Parr worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off Carthage.
Wolak recorded two of Elmhurst's seven hits.
Parr improved to 4-2 with the victory. He scattered six hits and two runs over nine innings while striking out five and not issuing a walk.
Elmhurst will travel to Kenosha to face Carthage in the rubber game of the three-game series tomorrow (April 22).
