Bluejays Sweep Doubleheader at North Central

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NAPERVILLE - The Elmhurst baseball team moved into third place in the CCIW standings after sweeping a doubleheader at North Central College.

Elmhurst (14-10, 6-5 CCIW) won the opening contest 3-2 and then held of North Central (15-9, 6-5 CCIW) for a 5-3 victory in game two.

ELMHURST 3, NORTH CENTRAL 2 (Game One) - After falling behind 2-0 in the opening inning, the Bluejays slowly chipped away at the Cardinals and rallied past North Central for a 3-2 victory.

Joe Turek gave North Central a quick 2-0 advantage by cracking a two-run homer in the bottom of the first.

The Bluejays got on the scoreboard in the second inning on consecutive doubles. Marc Shield led of the inning with a double and scored on Tim Nolan's RBI double to left.

The Bluejays evened the score in the fourth inning. Shield was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to second on Nolan's single. After a sacrifice bunt, Shield scored on Tyler Wargo's infield single.

The game remained even at 2-2 until the Bluejays jumped in front in the eighth inning. Shield walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on Nolan's sacrifice bunt. Shield took third on a wild pitch and scored on Zach Tsiodras' sacrifice fly.

Shield reached base three times and scored all three runs for the Bluejays.

Joe Luft improved to 4-1 on the mound for the Bluejays while shutting down the Cardinals' bats. Luft scattered eight hits and three runs while tossing 8.2 innings. After allowing two runs in the opening frame, Luft held the Cardinals scoreless for the next seven plus innings while striking out seven. Joe Ramirez recorded the final out of the game to record his second save of the season.

ELMHURST 5, NORTH CENTRAL 3 (Game Two) - The Bluejays secured their third CCIW series victory of the season by completing the doubleheader sweep of the Cardinals with a 5-3 win in game two.

Elmhurst broke a scorless tie with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Tsiodras drove in a run on a fielders choice grounder. Jake Bronkema followed with an RBI single to put Elmhurst up by two.

The Bluejays made it 4-0 in the fifth by scoring twice. Zach Hofer tripled in a run and then scored on a North Central error.

Tsiodras' singled home a run in the seventh to give the Bluejays a 5-0 advantage.

Elmhurst starter Jordan Hanlon sailed through the first seven innings before running into trouble in the eighth. Hanlon held the Cardinals scoreless through seven before an Elmhurst error opened the door for the Cardinals to score three runs in the eighth. The Cardinals had the tying runs in scoring position but Erik Swanson retired Alex Khoury to end the scoring threat.

Hanlon allowed just three hits and three unearned runs in 7.2 innings of work. He walked five and struck out seven. Swanson closed out the ninth inning to record his second save of the season

Bronkema and Dave Wolak recorded two hits apiece to lead the Bluejays' offense. Hofer and Wolak scored two runs each while Tsiodras drove in two.

Elmhurst will host North Central in the final game of the three-game series tomorrow (April 15).
