Box Score 2 XENIA, Ohio - The Elmhurst baseball team opened the 2012 season by sweeping a doubleheader from Capital University at the Athletes in Action Stadium in Xenia, Ohio. The Bluejays won game one 9-2 and finished the sweep with a 16-1 victory in game two.
ELMHURST 9, CAPITAL 2 - The Bluejays won their season-opening contest behind
Joe Luft's pitching performance. The Bluejays' senior hurler tossed a seven-inning complete game, limiting Capital to only two runs on four hits. Luft allowed four walks while fanning eight batters in the win.
Four Bluejays combined to account for all 10 of the team's hits.
Zach Hofer led the way for the Bluejays with a 3-for-4 day at the plate while driving in three.
Marc Shield finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Dave Wolak collected three hits and also drove in a run while
Tyler Wargo finished with two hits (including a triple) and scored a team-leading three runs.
ELMHURST 16, CAPITAL 1 - Elmhurst's bats came alive in game two as the Bluejays blew out the Crusades 16-1 in seven innings. Hofer doubled and tripled, driving in a team-leading four runs.
Brian Evans and Wolak drove in two runs apiece with a pair of hits while Wargo and
Brian O'Toole each finished with two hits, three runs scored and an RBI.
Zach Tsiodras finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and a run driven in.
Jordan Hanlon picked up the victory for the Bluejays on the mound. Hanlon worked six innings, limiting Capital to just three hits and one unearned run. He walked two while striking out five.
Elmhurst takes on Hanover College in a doubleheader on Sunday (March 11).
