Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - Justin Phipps scored 12 of his game-high 15 points in the second half to help the Elmhurst College men's basketball team hold off Millikin Universtiy for a 61-51 victory.
Looking to snap a 12-game skid, Millikin (1-21, 0-11 CCIW) battled with Elmhurst (11-11, 5-6 CCIW) for the entire first half as the Big Blue carried a 25-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Bluejays started quickly in the second, building a 31-28 lead just six minutes into the half. Millikin closed to within a point with 9:21 to play, but Elmhurst used a 9-0 run sparked by four points from Phipps and three points from
Brandon Grubl to open up a 42-32 cushion with seven minutes left on the clock. Millikin managed to pull to within seven points, but came no closer as the Bluejays hung on for the 10-point victory.
Phipps came off the bench to lead Elmhurst and all scorers with 15 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor. He added eight rebounds in the win.
Nick Sanford and
Jerome Robinson totaled 12 points apiece in the victory. Sanford added eight rebounds for Elmhurst while
Zack Boyd totaled 11 points. Grubl finished with six points and a team-leading five assists. .
Elmhurst struggled all game long with its shooting, hitting only 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the floor, including just 14.3 percent (2-of-14) from beyond the arc. Elmhurst also struggled from the foul line, shooting only 62.5 percent (15-of-24). The Bluejays dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Big Blue 46-30, including 27-15 in the second half.
Millikin finished the contest shooting 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from the field, including 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from downtown. Rodney Clark paced the Big Blue in the loss with 12 points and five assists. Matt Merrigan finished with 11 points and Nikko Robertson added eight points and seven rebounds.
Elmhurst travels to Augustana College on Saturday, February 11.
