Bluejays Topple Eagles For Third Win

Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's basketball team picked up its third win of the season by upending Benedictine University 81-64.

Elmhurst (3-6) led from start to finish, scoring the game's first nine points and never looking back. Benedictine (3-9) used an 8-2 run to pull to within two points at 12:43, but Elmhurst ripped off a 17-4 run to build a 15-point first-half advantage. The Bluejays led 34-25 at the break.

The Bluejays opened the second half with a 14-5 run to grab a 48-30 lead on Alex Morgunov's dunk. Benedictine managed to close to within 11 points with 14:35 to play, but Elmhurst responded with a 15-2 run over the next 4:45 to open up a commanding 63-39 lead. Elmhurst cruised the final 10 minutes of the game to score the 17-point win.

Elmhurst shot 50.8 percent (32-of-63) from the floor and dominated inside outscoring Benedictine 44-26 in the paint. The Bluejays struggled from long range, hitting only 3-of-17 three-point attempts.

Nick Sanford led Elmhurst in the win with a double-double, registering game highs in points (22) and rebounds (11). Sanford shot 9-of-12 from the floor and also blocked two shots. Taylor Baxter added 15 points and six assists for the Bluejays while Bryant Ackerman dumped in 14 points. Morgunov shot 6-of-10 from the floor to finish with 113 points and four rebounds.

Benedictine struggled from the floor the entire contest, shooting just 30.8 percent (16-of-52). The Eagles shot an identical 3-of-17 from three-point range. Elmhurst committed 33 personal fouls leading to 44 free throw attempts for the Eagles. Benedictine hit 29-of-44 from the foul line to shoot 65.9 percent.

Michael Woolf scored 13 points to pace the Eagles in the loss. Tim McGinty chipped in with 10 points.
