Bluejays Split Doubleheader With Wheaton

The Elmhurst College baseball team moved to 17-20 overall and 5-15 in CCIW play after splitting a doubleheader with Wheaton College. Elmhurst took game one 8-1 and dropped a 6-5 decision in game two.

ELMHURST 8, WHEATON 1 -
Joe Luft hurled a complete game while pitching the Bluejays to an 8-1 victory over the Thunder.

Luft limited the Thunder to only five hits and one run over the complete nine innings of work. He scattered two walks and fanned six while improving to 3-3 on the season.

Elmhurst struck first in the third inning when Zach Hofer doubled home Tyler Wargo to give Elmhurst a 1-0 lead. The Bluejays took advantage of a pair of Wheaton errors in the fourth to plate three unearned runs and take a 4-0 lead.

Wheaton (17-23, 8-13 CCIW) scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Bluejays' lead down to three runs.

Elmhurst tacked on four insurance runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach. Wargo and Hofer each drove home a run and Dan Matkovic delivered a two-run single to account for Elmhurst's finals runs of the game.

Brian Evans, Hofer and Dave Wolak recorded two hits apiece to lead the Bluejays' offense.

WHEATON 6, ELMHURST 5 - Elmhurst mounted a late rally in the top of the ninth, but the Bluejays left the tying run on third base and dropped a one-run decision to the Thunder.

Elmhurst jumped out in front in the third inning when Dave Parr scored on a wild pitch. Wheaton evened the score with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Bluejays jumped back on top in the sixth on Parr's RBI double.

Wheaton surged back in front in the bottom of the sixth, using a Justin Zeller two-run homer to jump in front 4-2. Zeller smacked another two-run homer in the eighth inning to put the Thunder up 6-2.

Elmhurst mounted a two-out rally in the ninth inning but fell a run shy in the end. With a runner on first and two outs, Brian Evans singled. Wargo followed with a run scoring single to make the score 6-3. Hofer cracked a two-run triple to right centerfield, pulling Elmhurst to within a run. Matkovic lined out to short to end the game.

Parr, Hofer, and Evans totaled two hits apiece to lead the Bluejays in the loss.

Brian Marquis took the loss for Elmhurst despite pitching well. Marquis worked seven innings and scattered five hits and four earned runs. He walked one and struck out one.

Steve Denison earned the win for the Thunder, working 8.2 innings and allowing just six hits and two earned runs. He walked four and struck out eight.

Elmhurst hosts Millikin University in a make-up game on Thursday, May 12.
