ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team slipped to 16-19 overall after falling 5-3 to Wheaton College at Butterfield Park.
Wheaton's Evan Rahn tossed a complete game for the Thunder, limiting the Bluejays to only two hits and three runs.
Wheaton (16-22, 7-12 CCIW) jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning on Austin Driggers' two-run double. Elmhurst (5-13 CCIW) cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third. The Bluejays loaded the bases after back-to-back hit batters and a bunt single from
Brian Evans.
Tyler Wargo drove in a run on a groundout, but Rahn pitched out of the jam allowing just one run.
Trey Martin doubled home a run in the fourth inning to give the Thunder a 3-1 lead. Ryan Miller put the Thunder up by three in the seventh inning. Miller singled and promptly stole second and third and scored on a throwing error by Elmhurst.
Elmhurst pulled to within a run in the eighth inning when
Zach Hofer smacked a two-run homer down the left field line to make the score 4-3.
Wheaton tacked on an insurance run in the ninth inning. Miller led off the frame with a triple and scored on Danny Pyne's sacrifice fly.
Rahn finished with 10 strikeouts while improving to 4-4 on the season. Elmhurst's
Dan Napientek took the loss, allowing five hits and three earned runs in 4.2 innings of work. He walked two and fanned two in the loss.
Elmhurst plays a doubleheader against Wheaton on Saturday (May 7) at Benedictine University in Lisle.
