ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team closed out the 2011 season by upending Millikin University 11-6 in a make-up game of an earlier rainout.
Elmhurst (18-20, 6-15 CCIW) raced out to a 10-1 lead and held off Millikin (18-20, 1-20 CCIW) for a five-run victory.
The Bluejays scored in each of the first four innings, taking a 10-1 lead in the process.
Zach Hofer and
Dave Wolak collected RBI singles in the first inning to help put the Bluejays up 3-0. Hofter singled home a run in the second and
Dan Matkovic added a run-scoring double to give the Bluejays a 5-1 cushion. The Bluejays plated two more runs in the third and added three in the fourth to open up a nine-run advantage.
Millikin scored three times in the seventh to cut the lead down to 10-4, but the Bluejays got a run back in the bottom of the frame on Hofer's run-scoring ground out. The Big Blue added solo tallies in both the eighth and ninth innings to make the final score 11-6.
Hofer sparked the Elmhurst offense, finishing 3-for-5 at the plate while driving in three runs and scoring twice.
Alex Molek also had a three-hit performance, finishing 3-for-5 with two RBI in the win. Wolak drove in a pair of runs while
Brian Evans collected two hits, scored three times, and also drove in a run.
Dave Parr picked up his team-leading sixth win of the season. Parr worked six inning and allowed just seven hits and one earned run. He walked one and struck out five.
