Bluejays Split Twin Bill With Carroll

The Elmhurst College baseball team moved to 15-18 overall after splitting a non-conference doubleheader at Carroll University. The Bluejays used a 13-run seventh inning to win game one 23-10, but Carroll rallied for a 6-5 win in game two.

ELMHURST 23, CARROLL 10 - Elmhurst sent 17 batters to the plate and scored 13 runs in the seventh inning to break open a 10-10 tie and pull away for a 23-10 win.

Elmhurst jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run homer from Zach Hofer and a two-run single from Brian Marquis.

Carroll answered back with four runs in the first and three in the second to to open up a 7-6 lead. Elmhurst tied the game in the third on a Marquis solo homer. The Bluejays scored a pair of runs in the fourth and tacked on another run in the fifth to take a 10-7 advantage. Carroll answered back with three runs in the sixth to knot the score at 10.

Elmhurst used 10 hits and drew three walks to break open up the seventh inning. Dave Wolak drove in four runs with a pair of two-run doubles while Eric Stevenson, Brian Evans and Dan Matkovic also drove in two runs apiece in the 13-run seventh inning.

Matkovic finished 4-of-6 at the plate with four runs scored and four RBI. Hofer collected four hits while scoring three runs and driving in three. Wolak and Marquis recorded three hits and four RBI apiece.

Alex Van Cleve made the start for Elmhurst and earned a no-decision. He allowed three hits and 10 runs while walking 10 and striking out two. Matt Bernier earned the win in relief, working 1.2 scoreless innings for Elmhurst.

CARROLL 6, ELMHURST 5 - Carroll rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth to upend Elmhurst 6-5.

Carroll (9-19) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings, but Elmhurst scored five straight runs to jump out to a 5-4 lead. Alex Molek roped a two-run double in the fourth to slice Carroll's lead in half. Dan Matkovic put Elmhurst on top 5-4 with a three-run homer in the fifth.

Carroll used a two-run single from Aaron Gendrich in the sixth to earn the 6-5 win.

Ricky Palandri suffered the loss for the Bluejays, surrendering three hits and two runs in 3.2 innings of relief. He walked five and fanned one.

Elmhurst hosts Dominican University on Monday, May 2, at 7:00 p.m.
