Elmhurst Drops Pair to 14th-Ranked Augustana

MOLINE, Ill. -
The Elmhurst College baseball team dropped to 10-9 overall after dropping both ends of a doubleheader to 14th-ranked Augustana College.

Augustana (16-3, 6-1 CCIW) toppled Elmhurst (10-9, 0-7 CCIW) 3-2 in the opening game and took the night cap 8-5.

2 - Augustana edged Elmhurst 3-2 in a pitcher's dual.

The Bluejays grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Dan Matkovic led off the frame with a single and then stole second. After a strikeout, Dave Wolak and Brian Marquis drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with just one out. Jake Bronkema drove home Matkovic with an RBI single to give Elmhurst a 1-0 lead. Tyler Wargo followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Wolak and stake the Bluejays to a two-run advantage.

Augustana cut the Bluejays' lead in half in the bottom of the second when Jeremy Juhl drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. The Vikings struck for two runs in the bottom off the third when Kurt Schmidt drove in a run on a single. Schmidt moved to third on an Elmhurst error and scored when Dave Hoffman bounced into a force play.

After surrendering two hits and two runs in the second inning, Augustana's Jared McIntosh silenced Elmhurst's bats for the next six innings. McIntosh did not allow a hit after the second inning and allowed only three base runners in his final six innings.Josiah Martin pitched a one-two-three inning in the ninth to notch his second save of the season.

Elmhurst's Joe Luft pitched well despite taking the loss. Luft tossed a complete game, allowing just four hits, two walks, and a pair of earned runs over eight innings. Luft struck out seven Vikings in the loss.

AUGUSTANA 8, ELMHURST 5 - The Bluejays dropped their seventh straight contest, falling to the Vikings 8-5.

Augustana took advantage of a pair of Elmhurst errors in the second inning to score five runs and take a 5-1 lead. Elmhurst pulled to within two runs by plating a pair in the third inning, but the Vikings answered back with two runs in the fourth to open up a four-run lead.

Elmhurst finished with 13 hits in the loss with Zach Hofer and Dan Bosco collecting three hits apiece. Wolak drove in two runs for Elmhurst in the loss.

Brian Marquis made the start and took the loss for the Bluejays. Marquis (2-2) surrendered 13 hits and four earned runs in six innings. He struck out one in the loss.

Elmhurst hosts Augustana on Sunday, April 10.
