CHICAGO, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team slipped to 10-7 overall and 0-5 in the CCIW following a pair of losses at North Park University. The Bluejays fell 6-5 in game one and dropped game two by a 9-7 score.
NORTH PARK 6, ELMHURST 5 - North Park (16-5, 3-2 CCIW) scored the tying run in the seventh and then squeezed home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to earn the 6-5 walk-off victory.
The Vikings scored a run in the first and another in the second to open up a 2-0 lead. Elmhurst struck back for three runs in the third to take a 3-2 lead.
Tyler Facker scored the team's first run on a wild pitch.
Dan Matkovic delivered a two-out, two-run single to put Elmhurst on top.
North Park answered back with two runs in the bottom the third to grab a 4-3 lead. Elmhurst responded back with two runs in the fourth inning. Elmhurst loaded the bases with no outs but Facker bounced into a 1-2-3 double play.
Brian Evans was hit by a pitch to load the bases a second time and
Joe Kennedy followed with a two-run single to give Elmhurst a 5-4 lead.
The Bluejays held the one-run lead until the seventh inning when Luis Diaz singled home the tying run for the Vikings. North Park scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to earn the victory. With one out and the bases empty, Brad Medina and Wade Yunker drew back-to-back walks. A double steal put runners on second and third for the Vikings.
Zach Hofer fanned Angel Carrasco for the second out of the inning, but pinch hitter Mike Sommerfield laid down a bunt single to score pinch runner Sean Witt and give the Vikings the one-run walk-off victory.
Hofer took the loss for Elmhurst in relief, surrendering one run and one hit in 1.1 innings of work. He walked two and fanned three.
NORTH PARK 9, ELMHURST 7 - Elmhurst erased a 5-0 deficit, but North Park scored three runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to pull away for the 9-7 victory.
North Park scored five times in the opening inning to open up a five-run cushion. Mike Domenick, Diaz, and Yunker all drove in runs in the opening frame for the Vikings while Zach Deutscher added a two-run double.
Elmhurst slowly chipped away at the lead, scoring a run in the fourth on a
Dave Wolak RBI single.
Alex Molek blasted a two-run homer in the fifth to pull Elmhurst to within two runs. Wolak evened the scored at five when he belted a two-run shot in the sixth inning.
The tie did not last long as North Park quickly scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Trevor Popp singled home a run and Eric Sousanes followed with a two-run double to give the Vikings an 8-5 lead.
Elmhurst pulled to within a run in the seventh inning when Hofer smashed a two-run homer. North Park tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to pull away for the two-run win.
Elmhurst collected 13 hits in the loss, with Evans, Kennedy, Hofer, Wolak, and Molek totaling two hits apiece. Wolak drove in three runs while Hofer and Molek collected two RBI apiece.
Bryan Baker took the loss in relief, allowing three runs and three hits in three innings. He walked two and struck out four.
Elmhurst will look to snap its five-game skid when they travel to Augustana College on Saturday, April 10.
